A wonderful book ~ eye-opening, and freeing! Reading this book helps to change lives in a most amazing way. Recommended to ALL! - especially to those who are sick of religion and church games. If you want the real thing - a deep, fulfilling, intimate relationship with God - this book is for you.

One of the best, most empowering biblical books I've ever read

I have been reading the bible for over 20 years and once called myself the queen of self-help books and an armchair therapist. I knew I had a lot of issues, and I was determined to change because I wanted to have the life I knew God said I could have. This book is an exceptional and thorough look at the topic of codependency and really relating to others in general. It's true power is, of course, the fact that it is based on and uses the Word of God. By taking the scriptures and showing how to apply the truthes in them specific to how we think and relate to others, this book is a powerful tool of transformation. I bought it when I found out I was married to a sexual addict. I was able to stop the ineffective ways I had used to try to change him and just work on changing me and freeing him to work with God to change himself. This review does not do this book justice. It is currently one of the most valueable books of my collection. I won't lend it because I refer to it and have many personal notes written throughout it- it's that good. HIGHLY recommend for ANY person- even if you don't think of yourself as codependent (I didn't either).

An excellent book with a powerful and freeing message

In an easy to read format, this book exposes some important and often undetected issues which have drastically penetrated into the Christian church, friendships, families and government.
The author does not set out to criticize anyone in this book. Rather, he reveals valuable truths which can set a person free from many behavioral disorders and addictive tendencies and also which can help a person prevent others from falling into the same.
Each chapter is written as a self-contained unit dealing with some aspect of codependent tendencies which we all share. It is written in very clear, concise and understandable English. It is a practical book dealing with real-life issues, not a collection of ineffective theories.
I highly recommend this book! A must-read for every new Christian, as well as for pastors, youth group leaders and anyone involved in ministry. This is one of the most liberating, freeing books you will probably ever read!

"We shall never be alone again like this"

Edith Wharton filled her novels with a feeling of ruin, passion and restriction. People can fall in love, but rarely do things turn out well.

But but few of even her books can evoke the feeling of "Ethan Frome," whick packs plenty of emotion, vibrancy and regrets into a short novella. While the claustrophobic feeling doesn't suit her writing well, she still spins a beautiful, horrifying story of a man facing a life without hope or joy.

It begins nearly a quarter of a century after the events of the novel, with an unnamed narrator watching middle-aged, crippled Ethan Frome drag himself to the post-office. He becomes interested in Frome's tragic past, and hears out his story.

Ethan Frome once hoped to live an urban, educated life, but ended up trapped in a bleak New England town with a hypochondriac wife, Zeena, whom he didn't love. But then his wife's cousin Mattie arrives, a bright young girl who understands Ethan far better than his wife ever tried to. Unsurprisingly, he begins to fall in love with her, but still feels an obligation to his wife.

But then Zeena threatens to send Mattie away and hire a new housekeeper, threatening the one bright spot in Ethan's dour life. Now Ethan must either rebel against the morals and strictures of his small village, or live out his life lonely. But when he and Mattie try for a third option, their affair ends in tragedy.

Wharton was always at her best when she wrote about society's strictures, morals, and love that defies that. But rather than the opulent backdrop of wealthy New York, here the setting is a bleak, snowy New England town, appropriately named Starkfield. It's a good reflection of Ethan Frome's life, and a good illustration of how the poor can be trapped.

Even when she describes a "ruin of a man" in a cold, distant town, Wharton spins beautiful prose ("the night was so transparent that the white house-fronts between the elms looked gray against the snow") and eloquent symbolism, like the shattered pickle dish. There's only minimal dialogue -- most of what the characters think and feel is kept inside.

Instead she piles on the atmosphere, and increases the tension between the three main characters, as attraction and responsibility pull Ethan in two directions. It all finally climaxes in the disaster hinted at in the first chapter, which is as beautifully written and wistful as it is tragic.

If the book has a flaw, it's the incredibly small cast -- mainly just the main love triangle. Ethan's not a strong or decisive man, but his desperation and loneliness are absolutely heartbreaking, as well as his final fate. Mattie seems more like a symbol of the life he wants that a full-fledged person, and Zeena is annoying and whiny up until the end, when we see a different side of her personality. Not a stereotypical shrew.

"Ethan Frome" is a true tragedy -- as beautifully written as it is, it's still Wharton's description of how a man merely survives instead of living, hopeless and devastated.

Cold and bleak but haunting

This is a short, intense novel that absolutely gripped me when I read it. The cold, bleak setting seems so appropriate to Ethan Frome's existence. A life full of obligation and duty, with no hint of joy or spontaneity.

Mattie Silver, a cousin of Ethan's wife Zenobia (Zeena) brings a small amount of light and life into Ethan's life. Ethan pays a heavy price for this, as do both Mattie and to a lesser extent Zeena.

This is a sad novel about duty, tragedy and mutual obligation. It is not a light read, but it is a wonderful piece of prose that demonstrates that there is a form of beauty in brevity.

Highly recommended.

It's Snowing, It's Snowing!

Once in a while you have to put down those current novels, and read some classic literature. And Edith Wharton is one of the best.
This story takes place in the cold, bleak winter farmlands of Massachusetts. Ethan Frome, a poor farmer, has a hard life tending to his land, trying to make a meager living, and also taking care of his ungrateful, demanding, sickly wife, Zeena. When her cousin, Mattie, comes to help her, Ethan's life changes completely. He falls deeply in love with Mattie. This being the 1800's, he must endure the stifling conventions of that era's society also. There love for each other proves to be a fascinating story.
I loved this book. This is a story that will definitely take you away. You'll actually feel you are there. Edith's detail description of the scenery and landscape of that time are truly vivid. I found myself pausing from my reading to look outside to see if it was actually snowing. I highly suggest you find time to read "Edith Wharton's books, you'll be grateful. I certainly was!

About the Author

Geoffrey Hudson is a barrister and consultant average adjuster. He is a Titulary Member of the Comit� Maritime International and a Vice-President of the British Maritime Law Association, having previously served as Chairman of its Executive Committee and Convenor of its General Average Committee.

Michael Harvey is an average adjuster. He is a Fellow of the Association of Average Adjusters and served as Chairman in 2004/5. He served on the London insurance market committee that devised and revised the International Hull Clauses in 2002 and 2003. He has addressed the International Marine Claims Conference on several occasions and chaired the sub-committee that formulated the IMCC Claims Handling Guidelines of 2009.

All those who read Guinn's account of Bonnie and Clyde were impressed by the unprecedented level of detail he brings to the story. But a few seemed to think that all of Guinn's data got in the way of the chase. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel admitted that the level of detail posed the book's "only problem," while acknowledging that "the legend still stands under its own power." Indeed, reviewers were generally pleased by Guinn's ability to add new layers to Bonnie and Clyde's brief, hardscrabble lives and to shed new light on their impulses without weighing them down. Reviewers were particularly interested in the idea of the duo as heroes of the Great Depression, with obvious anxiety that that era might not seem so distant these days. Yes, reviewers are prone to provide enthusiastic reviews for a newspaper's books editor; yet Go Down Together is still a strong book.

Almost 75 years ago, the four-year murder and robbery spree of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow ended in a hail of bullets on a desolate Louisiana road. During those four years, the Barrow Gang held up a few banks, knocked over numerous grocery stores, killed several police officers, and successfully cast themselves as latter-day Robin Hoods struggling against an unjust social order. This work strives, successfully for the most part, to strip away the sensationalism and view the couple and their exploits accurately. Less lyrical than Paul Schneider in Bonnie and Clyde: The Legend behind Their Lives (2009), Guinn, an investigative journalist, uses a conventional narrative approach and utilizes primary sources effectively. Here, Bonnie is revealed as a petite, intelligent, but frustrated young woman whose thirst for excitement made her vulnerable to a more worldly and big-talking Clyde. Despite her image as a gun-toting moll, she apparently never fired a shot at anyone. Guinn describes Barrow as an almost comically inept thief who was physically weak, belligerent, and out to avenge himself upon a “system” that he believed mistreated him. Simply the Best Book on Bonnie and Clyde

I just finished this book for the second time, and I enjoyed the read better than the first one. I've long been an enthusiast of 1930s crime books and articles and have read almost everything I could find on Bonnie and Clyde. There are several books about the couple: many of them simply rehash what's been said time and time again; a couple written by B&C family members are obviously biased toward the two criminals, sometimes outright lying; a few, however are excellent, offering new information gained from primary research and a fresh perspective. Guinn's book tops them all. His research is meticulous, and he leaves very few questions unanswered--if any.

His covers every shootout, big and small, with great care to get the who shot whom, who missed, how bad were the wounds, etc. correct. It is a huge plus that the man is a very good writer. He brings the events to life--even the ones you've read about many times before. I guarantee that you will find bits and pieces throughout the entire book that you never knew--regardless of how much you think you know about the pair.

The climax is, of course, the ambush in which Bonnie and Clyde are gunned down. There's a good chance you've read about it and/or seen it depicted in film and on TV. As good or far-fetched as other accounts may be, Guinn gets it right. From the weapons each of the six posse members used, where, precisely, they were positioned: how many feet apart--Guinn has done his homework and has left nothing uncovered--to who fired first, whose bullet hit which victim and, perhaps most importantly, who fired the final shots into an already dead or dying, Bonnie Parker.

Guinn goes further than researching their lives, crimes, and era; he offers keen insight into what Clyde or Bonnie was probably thinking at a certain juncture, why a life was spared or taken, what was running through Frank Hamer's mind before, during, and after the ambush. The author brings everything together and does a remarkably fair job throughout. He leaves no detail out, narrating each moment of each crime to let us see the ugliness, senselessness, and tragedy. And he shows the monster that Clyde Barrow often was. But he also reveals Barrow as a man who cared deeply for his family and Bonnie and who, at least in his own mind, lived by a moral code. Guinn offers no excuses for Bonnie and Clyde.

Was society partly to blame for Barrow's decision to become a career criminal? Before you answer, read the chapters about Clyde's incarceration in Huntsville prison and how he lost one job after another because of his past crimes. There is no easy answer, and Guinn knows this. He allows the reader to make up his or her own mind.

I recommend this book to anyone who is remotely interested any facet of crime and/or the Depression era. It is, for now, the last and best word on the Bonnie and Clyde story.

I've read a few books on this topic, and remember watching the old 1967 movie with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, and I'd been wanting this book for a while. So I finally got it and was pleased with it.

I found it to be true to life, showing and telling us how the outlaws were not so slick all the time, and it cost them dearly at times. Not the super criminals some folks made them out to be, but just learning as they went, and screwing up their fair share of the time. Their so-called glamorous life was often lonely and miserable, spent on the run and far from loved ones and comfort. Just when they'd think they had somewhere they could rest their bones for a minute, they would be spotted or just think they had been, and off they would have to run again. Often having to abandon some of their things, depending on how much warning they'd gotten, leaving them to have to steal more. Or putting their trust in the wrong cohorts.

Medical help was difficult to come by on the run, and they often had to make do with what they could get at pharmacies for serious wounds from bullets, etc. Very fact filled, and so many details. Very enjoyable if you like true crime and history.

Go down together was "fantabulous". This book gave me a better understanding of how Clyde began and continued his life of crime. I have an understanding of how the Dallas police hounded him until he went to prison where he became a hardened person. My great uncle Malcolm Stanley Davis was a Tarrant County deputy sheriff and was killed by the barrow gang. The mention of this event is recorded in this book and it is recorded exactly how the story was told by my father .

My father, Edward Davis and Gordon Tate captured one of the robbers of the First National Bank of Grapevine, Texas and the bank robbery is the reason Uncle Malcolm was on stake out in Dallas on January 6th, 1933 when he was killed.

This book gave me an appreciation for Bonnie and Clyde I had never had, I am sorry uncle Malcolm was killed by the Barrow gang and I have no antipathy for any of the Parkers or Barrows. I went to school with Jimmy Barrow and we never had any trouble.

I highly recommend this book if you want to know the truth about Bonnie and Clyde.

The F2H-3/4 Banshee ("Big Banjo") was a direct outgrowth of the F2H-1 and F2H-2 series of Korean war fighter and recon jets (see Naval Fighters #73 Early Banshees). It became the US Navy's first single seat all-weather carrier interceptor. To satisfy its mission the F2H-3/4 was required to have a significant increase in range. To accomplish this the internal fuel capacity was more than doubled by stretching the fuselage by 8 feet 1.6 inches. This gave the F2H-3/4 a combat range with tip tanks of 1,490 nautical miles. In addition to the fuselage extension, the tail surfaces of the F2H-3/4 were also redesigned. The horizontal tail was moved down to the rear of the fuselage tail cone and given a 10 degree dihedral. To accommodate the enlarged radar unit the four nose-mounted cannons were moved aft along the lower fuselage sides. The difference in the F2H-3 and F2H-4 was in the radar. The F2H-3 used the Westinghouse APQ-41 with a 28" dish and the F2H-4 was equipped with the Hughes APG-37 radar. The F2H-4 further differs from the -3 by having up-rated J34-WE-38 engines. The larger engines allowed for a service ceiling of 56,000 ft. The aircraft also had increased wing stations and was capable of carrying Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. The aircraft were active with the Navy and Marines from 1952 through 1959. It was operated by 31 active Navy and Marine squadrons which histories appear in the book along with squadron insignia. The book also includes a chapter on Royal Canadian F2H-3s.

About the Author
Upon graduation from college, Steve Ginter was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Navy and became a pilot. After leaving the Navy he entered into corporate human resources at the management level. Steve Ginter founded Ginter Books, Naval Fighters Series in 1980 while working in district and regional management positions for Thrifty Drugs. In the 1990s the Air Force Legends Series was launched. Between the two series, over 112 books have been published thus far promoting the colorful history of military aircraft in America.

Standard Ginter authored Naval Fighters title

This is standard Naval Fighters fare. It's an 8-1/2" x 11", 176 page, square bound card cover with color restricted to the front and rear covers. Well, at least the rear cover. The front cover is obviously colorized. The necessity for this is not clear. Surely color photography was common enough in the 1950s that an appropriate color photo could be found?

The present volume, along with Naval Fighters 73 which covers the early F2Hs, replaces the very early Naval Fighters 2. As with most Steve Ginter authored titles photographs of the aircraft in the markings of all relevant units and their histories take precedent over the aircraft itself. Thus we get a page and a half of text, 30 odd pages of supporting photos and reproductions of contemporary technical literature, a few pages of model kit reviews, and 140 pages of the F2H in service with its various squadrons and units.

To illustrate the various unit markings Ginter reproduces his old black and white drawings where the colors are described in captions. This is really inadequate in this day and age and the production values of this series could really use an upgrade to include interior color and modern graphics.

Books on the F2H are not thick underfoot so I hesitate to judge Ginter too harshly for coming out with two of them in recent years. I just wish there was more about the aircraft than the units it served in. Recommended to Naval Fighters fans familiar with Ginter's authorial style.
