Great read in energy literacy!

Got this as a rental for an Intro to Energy Systems course. The issues are presented fairly, in a non-biased manner. I really liked that scholarly articles are used to support or refute the issues. If you're using it for school, you can find most of the ones in the book on Google Scholar, which is a great launchpad if you're looking for sources to write a paper. Even if you're not a student, this is a great starting point to become more energy-literate!

We used this book as a reference for debate topics in a Penn State University college Sustainability course.Since this was published back in 2011 an update is probably needed by now since certain technologies and political changes have impacted the material.

This story begins in a shadowed forest on Good Friday in the year of our Lord 1300. It proceeds on a journey that, in its intense re-creation of the depths and the heights of human experience, has become the key with which Western civilization has sought to unlock the mystery of its own identity.

About the Author
Dante Alighieri was born in Florence in 1265 and belonged to a noble but impoverished family. He was married when he was around twenty to Gemma Donati and had four children. He met Beatrice, who was to be his muse, in 1274, and when she died in 1290 he sought distraction in philosophy and theology, and wrote La Vita Nuova. He worked on the Divine Comedy from 1308 until near the time of his death in Ravenna in 1321.

Dorothy L. Sayers wrote novels, poetry, and translated Dante for Penguin Classics. She died in 1957.

Barbara Reynolds was Lecturer in Italian at Cambridge University and subsequently Reader in Italian Studies at Nottingham, and Honorary Reader at Warwick. She has written books, both on Italian authors and on Dorothy L. Sayers.

Sayers Meets Dante: Interpreting the Poet's Voice...

This review relates to the volume 1 of Dante Alighieri's
-The Divine Comedy-, Hell; Translated by Dorothy L. Sayers,
Penguin Classics, 1949. 346 pp.
Other reviewers have spoken to the perceived weaknesses
and problems with this particular translation and
volume, with Ms. Sayers' "Introduction" and "Notes."
Perhaps one should be warned before entering its portals,
as constructed by Ms. Sayers, that this is not an "easy"
Hell to assimilate.
Yet, at the beginning of her "Introduction," she presents
the offering in an inviting fashion: "The ideal way of
reading -The Divine Comedy- would be to start at the first
line and go straight through to the end, surrendering to
the vigour of the story-telling and the swift movement
of the verse, and not bothering about any historical
allusions or theological explanatios which do not occur
in the text itself. That is how Dante himself tackles
his subject."
Some readers may not find Ms. Sayers' translation to be
one that lends itself to "swift movement of the verse."
The value here, however, is the wealth of information
provided in both the "Introduction", the Notes, and
in the map drawings which clearly help the mind's eye
understand the "lay-out" of Hell as depicted by Dante.
The value of Ms. Sayer's "Introduction" is its clear
presentation of HER view of Dante, his work, his value,
his meaning, and his emphases.
She concentrates on the Images of Hell and on the Christian
doctrine implicit in the work. This translation is in
keeping with that emphasis, for it is structured,
somewhat restricted, and presents "Dante's" voice
as more attuned to the didactic and lecturing. Even the
voices of the denizens of Hell have the tones of
stern lesson-learning rather than evoking pity for
their failed virtue and blind human proclivities.
The problem with some readers, and some viewers of
Christianity, is trying to reconcile the idea of
stern, unrelenting, eternal Judgment and damnation
for sins with the idea of God's eternal Love, or as
Ms. Sayers translates the second tercet of Dante's
*terza rima* on the lintel of the entrance to Hell:
Justice Moved My Great Maker; God Eternal
Wrought Me: The Power, And The Unsearchably
High Wisdom, And The Primal Love Supernal.
Ms. Sayers will have no human shilly-shallying with
Dante's intent or the purpose of Hell. And that,
though it may appall some readers, is to the good;
for it forces the reader to confront whether or not
he or she accepts or does not the Christian doctrinal
views -- and helps the reader to understand the
serious nature of choosing one's faith and one's
religion, or not.
After each Canto, Ms. Sayers uses the same very
helpful devices for explaining the preceding Canto:
first, she discusses the main Images to be found in
that particular Canto in a very clear, full, doctrinal
way -- and then, she has the numbered notes which
explain allusions and phrases which Dante uses in
the work.
For instance, after Canto I, we find: "The Images.
-The Dark Wood- is the image of Sin or Error -- not so
much of any specific act of sin or intellectual perversion
as of that spiritual condition called "hardness of heart",
in which sinfulness has so taken possession of the soul as
to render it incapable of turning to God, or even knowing
which way to turn." Similarly, after Canto III, we find
this note concerning the phrase "the good of intellect":
"In the -Convivio- Dante quotes Aristotle as saying:
'truth is the good of the intellect'. What the lost souls
have lost is not the intellect itself, which still functions
mechanically, but the -good- of the intellect: i.e., the
knowledge of God, who is Truth."
This is an excellent edition for the scope of Ms. Sayers'
medieval scholarship and doctrinal insights. Though it
may be hard sledding for the tender-hearted. There
have always been several ways of seeing the road to
Hell -- in this version, once one strays from the
straight and narrow, there is only the crooked and
pit-full, not pitiful.

A readable translation with helpful notes and introduction

Having wanted to read Inferno for a long time, I was glad to find Dorothy Sayers' translation since I value her own writing. I'm no scholar, so I can't compare this critically to the numerous other translations available. I just come looking to enjoy reading and understanding great classic literature on occasion. It takes a great deal of background information to appreciate this work. The Divine Comedy can be examined from many different angles: Poetry, allegory, theology, a spiritual journey, a love story. Sayers' introduction and notes, and the diagrams and drawings in this book were a great help to me. Some may argue that the scholarship is a bit dated, but Sayers clearly loved The Divine Comedy and wanted her readers to appreciate it also. The result of her work was a very interesting reading experience for me, better than I expected. I particularly enjoyed the insights she incorporated into the notes from Charles Williams' book, The Figure of Beatrice. (Sayers dedicated her translation of The Divine Comedy to Williams.) The verse might make it a little more difficult to get the meaning until you get used to it, but I think it's worth the effort. Once I found a good reading pace, I didn't find the rhyming forced as some readers have. (It might seem that way if you look for it.) It must be a difficult thing to try to give readers of English the same experience that Dante's Italian readers had and I think that was Dorothy Sayers' goal. She got me interested enough to take seriously her claim that readers of Dante are cheating themselves if they stop after Inferno. On through Purgatory to Paradise ... It must only get better from here.

Poetry even for us monoglots

Let's begin with Dante. Called "the divine poet" (hence the adjective attached to his humbly titled Commedia), it is a difficult moniker to argue with, not because Dante is writing of heaven but because his imagery, his imagination, and his humility are true imitations of the creative activity of God. Dante is a sublime "sub-creator" to use the coinage of JRR Tolkien. If you can read the Commedia and not be moved to tears, one is tempted to doubt your humanity for Dante portrays the race in all its beauty and putridness and denies neither. He neither celebrates mankind's faculties and achievements beyond their due nor fears to recognize the vileness of which humans are capable.

And it is Canticle II, the poet's ascent through Purgatory, which stirs so deeply the soul and inspires the very penitence and hope of purgation which Dante describes there. One need not be a Roman Catholic or ascribe to Purgatory as doctrine in order to recognize and appreciate what Dante has done in describing the landscape of repentance and hope. (Being a Christian may help, but even on this point one suspects that the divine poet may well perform the function of evangelist, as well as exegete, and lead the searching soul to beatific vision of its own.) Clearly his purpose is not merely to describe what sinners of the past are doing in the afterlife to purify their souls for Paradise, but also to inspire his contemporary readers (who are, of course, yet living when the poem is published in 1321) to examine themselves just as the joyful penitents do on the cornices of Mount Purgatory. It is refreshing--a sort of glorious wound, the healing of which leaves one stronger and more whole than he had been before the hurt.

But what of the translation? We who do not (yet) enjoy the privilege of reading the Commedia in Italian must read the poem in translation--and there are plenty to choose from! Given its primacy among the works of Western Literature in the Middle Ages, the poem has been translated by everyone from Dryden and Pope to Allen Mandelbaum and John Ciardi. So first of all, without question one MUST insist on a verse translation! Prose translations can hardly suffice to communicate the rhythm and terseness of Dante's terza rima which is so integral to the poem. Nor can the majesty of the subject, the grandeur of the poet's climb toward Paradise with all its anticipation and awe be fully communicated in a prose rendering. How well various attempts at verse have succeeded in doing so is the big debate.

In this reviewer's humble opinion, Dorothy L Sayers has succeeded to a degree which surpasses any extant English translation. Are there occasional awkwardnesses? Yes. Is the literal meaning of some lines lost from time to time? Yes, but always for the sake of a gain in some other important respect and always with explanation. Sayers' is the only translation of note which manages to render in English the full terza rima rhyme scheme employed by Dante--and even that feat is worth a few awkward passages or archaisms, it seems to me. One feels much closer to the Divine Poet reading Sayers' translation aloud than, say, Ciardi's half-attempted rhymes, lucid as he can often be.

Whatever else you do, read the Commedia--all of it! It is rather unfortunate that it has become common practice to publish the poem in three volumes rather than presenting it as an integrated whole. Though the familiarity of many ends with Inferno, those who press on I suspect will love Purgatorio best (but fortunately one is not forced to choose), and I am confident readers will be well rewarded for reading Sayers' brilliant translation. One would be hard pressed to find a translator who was more passionate about her subject and who labored more lovingly and meticulously over her rendering of this beloved work than Dorothy L Sayers.

Friendship Turns To Love

As I sat down to write this review, I had everything that I wanted to say planned out. Then I started thinking, and all of it sounded like things that I had said before. Melissa is amazing and knows how to captivate an audience. I’ve said that before, but there are very few other authors that have written this many books in a series or ever for that matter and that still have me caught up in the story like it’s my first time reading something that they wrote. Favorite authors are something that are of differing opinions to everyone, but for me, Melissa Foster is right up there with the greats. Catching Cassidy was amazing. The way that the Harborside was described was as if I had been there or was going to go there one day. It sounds like such a place that I would want to call home. I used to live in a beach area and so this just took me back to when I could say that I didn’t vacation there, I lived there.

Each and every character that Melissa writes about or introduces to her readers is one that becomes your new favorite. She does not make it so that the secondary characters fall to the wayside either. They all have their story and their background of what got them where they are. You will always want to know more and what is going to happen next. It’s that draw that sucks you in and has other people around you wondering if you are ever going to come out of the book back into reality. I don’ want to sometimes, honestly. Wyatt and Cassidy are the type of characters that make me just want to jump and shout at a book. They had known each other for what was forever in their lifetimes, but why ruin a good friendship with something more? It’s a question a lot of people have to ask when they cross that boundary between friendship and wanting to be more for each other.

Even though things happen in the novel to both Wyatt and Cassidy to slowly make them unravel, they are there for each other. Period. I love that. The feelings had probably been there all along but they just needed that push to make them surface. They can’t hide what is happening to them, but their fear makes them drag their feet. I kept screaming in my mind that they were great together and they just needed to get over that hump. I was so happy when they finally made that leap. I was excited for them and where this would take them. This is the beginning of yet another great series by Melissa entangled within the rest, and I can not wait to see where it takes us.

Catching Cassidy

Beautifully written, story about young college graduates, group that have been friends forever, Wyatt and his sis Delilah, and Cassidy( their best friend for many years), just having graduated, going thru so, so many emotions. Excitement, lust, jealousy, love, hurt, sadness, death, so so many emotions unsure how to deal with, at a time they all should be happy, at their after graduation. Wyatt and Delilah' parents are killed on the way home by a semi, they are unsure how to deal with all this, funeral, business? The emotions he feels for Cassidy? Awesome story showing how they are thrown into an adult world, dealing with death of loved one's, having one's own business, just dealing with death, and new feelings for best friend, Cassidy, a must read, you will be in awe!!❤️!

This book to me was a coming of age book.

What happens when you have to grow up over night? At the age of 22 Wyatt has been your typical college graduate. He is use to the parties and the girls. But all that changes in a night. His best friend is Cassidy, she has been the one female in his life, besides his twin sister and his mom, that has been there. They have had each other's backs since they can remember. The night of their graduation party brings this in full force when Cassidy realizes the man she has been with for the 2 years is nothing but a cheat. Cassidy's life is swirling out of control. Of course Wyatt is there for her but then the tables turn and Wyatt and Delilah (his twin) get horrific news concerning their parents. This makes Wyatt go from a young college grad to a man over night. What happens though when your life is thrown into a cluster? These 3 leave town and head to their second home at the beach. Their friends there all come together and for the summer become one. This is Wyatt and Delilah's family now.

Cassidy has only ever wanted one thing and that is to be loved. Her ex couldn't even do that. The only love she has ever felt is from Wyatt and his family. Her parents couldn't be bothered to care, always gone. When Wyatt's parents are in a horrible accident she does what she knows she has to, she will do anything to support Wyatt in his plans. But things between the two become weird. Feelings neither knew where there start to surface. Cass has always wanted to be like the girls Wyatt has liked. She has always had a crush on him but never acted on it because their friendship means to much. This summer changes everything though. She wants to explore her feeling for Wyatt but he pushes her away. Can these two over come fears? Or will Cassisdy do what has always been excepted of her and leave after the summer?

This was a cute story of two people finding themselves and each other. I would recommend this book to others. The author did a good job on her writing and her detail. I felt at times there was to much detail and the story became boring at times but besides that I found this story to be a quick easy read.

a compelling case against cynical art

This is a well written book that takes on some of the prescient problems of the art world today. Thankfully Mr. Wheelock steers clear of the kind of jargon that October peddles and makes one want to reach for a gun. I actually like some of Cattelan's work, but that doesn't keep me from agreeing with the premise of the book. A must for anyone who is interesting in contemporary art, or who wonders why so much of it is thin and tiring.

There inheres in this well researched and well considered book enough information, insight and good will to enable anyone curious about the global art marketplace to read on with a measure of calm. Wheelock follows an historic thread that runs through Duchamp, Warhol and Klein with an eye toward these artists' concepts of what constitutes an artwork. He uses Cattelan's career as a teaching tool, explicating the current issues of the art market in concrete terms.

A very savvy guidebook for a tricky terrain.

Greatly Enjoyed

I love catching up with my Canadian shifters. Francine is pregnant, the twins are thriving, the ladies are still crazy as all get up and the fellas are still sexy. I enjoyed Jiao and Sheng a brother going to any extremes to protect his sister and keep the promise that he made to his parents about her safety. I loved that Jiao was for Chris they made a sweet couple and Gina and Sheng what a great combination. Gina was my kinda girl, loud, sassy, confident, curvy and knows what she wants and isn't afraid to admit it. I love this series.

Poor Chris a player and a ladies man finds his mate, but before he can claim her to be his, he gets another surprise.. She is freakn' MARRIED! Not wanting to go down his sister or brothers path and have a menage relationship he is determined to get "Jill" to be his. After all the man she married is not her true mate.

The chemistry started as soon as Jill opened the door. They both realize right away that they are mates but there is the little problem of Jills husband Jack. But Jill being married isn't even half of it. What her and Jack have together is not a normal in any sort of way marriage! I mean it, so if you are like cheaters suck please have no fear because you will soon find out that this is so not the case.

Even though the marriage isn't as it seems it is still hard for Jill to be with Chris. But our handy man is not giving in without a fight. They start off with a few stolen moments after his cousin Gina decided to help out with Jack. She is going to be a distraction but soon finds out that her Jack are way more then that.

Before any of these couples can be together shit hits the fan. All Jack and Jills secrets come pouring out!!

Oh my I am sorry. I totally went into summary mode. There is just so much happening. We are dealing with 2 couples, well kinda 3 if you count the marriage that isn't a marriage.

I love Chris's family! Seriously his mom kicks ass. When the bad guys come for Jill, Chris knows just what to do. He calls his mommy. A wise call because the woman is a bad ass. The family relationships are just something I totally enjoyed.

This is a great read. While I enjoy the menage couples, I am really a one guy one girl kinda gal. I guess its that possessive side in me that just can't totally wrap my head around sharing.

Already Freakn' Mated is sure to bring a smile to your face, some snorts and of coarse get you a little hot and bothered!! Eve Langlais can really do no wrong in my reading world!!

Gr 1-2–Tally McNally is obsessed with keeping score using tally marks. All day long the cat records who is the faster, smarter, smaller, taller, etc., and due to his sneaky ways, he wins every time. When Tom Cat declares himself the wettest during a rainstorm, Tally goes to extreme measures to prove he's even wetter and ends up in the sewer drain. Now his tallying comes in handy as he knows which cats to ask for help. In the end, all of his friends work together to pull him out, and Tally Cat ends his tallying ways. The final two pages feature an explanation of what tally marks are, how to use them, and how they are used by Tally Cat. This explanation could have been placed before the story for even better effect. The illustrations depict a bunch of street savvy, hip cats with great facial expressions. Andrew Harris makes the most of showing how much tallying Tally Cat does and gives readers ample opportunity to count the marks. Great extra touches include the classic cat "hang in there" motivational poster in the alley hangout. This is a fabulous story of a tallying alley cat, Tally McNally, who learned the value of counting on his friends!

Tally McNally was not only an alley cat, but he was also a "tally cat." Graffiti wasn't his thing, but a bit of tallying was. Of course he always had to come out on top and he tallied everything from the mice he caught to how many lives he'd used up. Kitty used up four, Boots had used up two, and Tally had used up eight. The bricks in his alley were covered with Tally's statistics because "He kept a tally all day long of who was right and who was wrong, / of who was tall and who was taller, / of who was small and who was smaller." He was "scratch, scratch, scritcy, scratch, scratch" not to be undone!

It wouldn't be long before Stripes, Kitty, Boots, and Tom Cat would get really aggravated with his constant one upmanship. It began to rain and all the cats tried to stay under cover. Raincoats, umbrellas, came out and even Kitty spread the pages of a cat magazine over her head to keep the rain from soaking her. Poor Tom Cat got totally drenched and as he threw himself into a ratty old chair, he complained, "I'm soaked to my skin. No cat is as wet." Well, naturally Tally McNally wasn't going to have any of that and poured a bottle of water over his head. "Ten drops for you and sixteen for me / means I'm the wettest. / You'll have to agree." Soon there was a challenge and Tom Cat threw himself into a puddle, but Tally McNally, not to be outdone, accidentally was washed into a drain. "Scratch, scratch, scritcy, scratch, scratch" . . . would anyone be able to save him?

This is a fabulous story of a tallying alley cat, Tally McNally, who learned the value of counting on his friends. I loved how this story easily incorporated the math concept of tallying and the value of friendship in this delightful tale. In the back of the book there is an explanation of tallying and what each line represents and how "we can keep track of more than one thing at a time." Many children don't like the fact that there always manages to be one in the crowd who feels they are better than everyone else, are smarter, and are always the best at everything. Tally is representative of that type of person, but the story very gently and tactfully shows him the error of his ways. The artwork? Well, "Scratch, scratch, scritcy, scratch, scratch," it would be mighty hard to top the adorable factor. This multifaceted book would be an excellent read and discuss book in the homeschool or classroom setting!

Math can be fun!

Trudy Harris did an excellent job to teach math in a fun way. I love the relation to multiple school subjects in one book. The back of the book gives great ways to teach kids how to tally, and there could be multiple extension activities you could use in a classroom or in your home. The illustrations are also very well done (by her son). What a great combination of two talented people from the same family.
I look forward to using this book in my own classroom one day when I am a teacher.

Super funny with a great lesson involved

I love this book! I want to be a teacher one day and I know that this is a great book to read to the class. It has so many different lessons: math, being the bigger person, and it's funny too. I read over a hundred books in my children's literature class and this was for sure one of my favorites. The illustrations are really enjoyable to look at too.
