About the Author
James D. Gwartney holds the Gus A. Stavros Eminent Scholar Chair at Florida State University, where he directs the Stavros Center for the Advancement of Free Enterprise and Economic Education. His writings have been widely published in both professional journals and popular media. He is a co-author of COMMON SENSE ECONOMICS: WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WEALTH AND PROSPERITY (St. Martin's Press, 2016), a primer on economics and personal finance. Dr. Gwartney's current research focuses on the measurement and determination of factors that influence cross-country differences in income levels and growth rates. In this regard he is the co-author (with Robert Lawson and Joshua Hall) of the annual report, Economic Freedom of the World, which provides information on the institutions and policies of 157 countries. This data set, published by a worldwide network of institutes in 80 countries, is widely used by scholars investigating topics ranging from economic growth to peaceful relations among nations. Dr. Gwartney served as Chief Economist of the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress during 1999-2000. In 2004, he was the recipient of the Adam Smith Award of the Association of Private Enterprise Education for his contribution to the advancement of free market ideals. He is a past President of the Southern Economic Association and the Association for Private Enterprise Education. He earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Washington.

Richard L. Stroup is Professor Emeritus of economics at Montana State University and Professor Emeritus of economics at North Carolina State University. His Ph.D. is from the University of Washington. From 1982 to 1984 he served as director of the Office of Policy Analysis at the U.S. Department of the Interior. Stroup has published and lectured on topics such as global warming, land use regulation, archaeology, and about needed environmental policy improvements. His research helped to develop the approach known as free market environmentalism. He is a co-author of COMMON SENSE ECONOMICS: WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WEALTH AND PROSPERITY (St. Martin's Press, 2016). His book ECONOMICS: WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ECONOMICS AND THE ENVIRONMENT (Washington: Cato Institute, 2003) was sponsored by the Property and Environment Research Center, of which he is a co-founder.

Russell S. Sobel earned his Ph.D. in economics from Florida State University in 1994. He has published more than 200 books and articles, and has received national recognition for his works on entrepreneurship and FEMA reform. Dr. Sobel serves on the editorial board for three academic journals, and on the advisory board for four university centers. He has won numerous awards for both his teaching and his research. He regularly teaches courses in both principles of economics and public economics and gives lectures at economic education outreach programs. Dr. Sobel is a Professor of Economics and Entrepreneurship at The Citadel.

David A. Macpherson is the E.M. Stevens Distinguished Professor of Economics and Economics Department Chair at Trinity University. Previously, he was Director of the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy and the Rod and Hope Brim Eminent Scholar of Economics at Florida State University, where he received two university-wide awards for teaching excellence. His teaching areas include principles of microeconomics, money and banking, econometrics, and labor economics. Dr. Macpherson is an applied economist whose research focuses on real estate, pensions, discrimination, industry deregulation, labor unions, and the minimum wage. He has published more than 60 articles in leading economics and real estate journals, including Review of Economic and Statistics, Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of Human Resources, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Journal of Real Estate Economics and Finance. His research has been funded by a variety of entities including the National Science Foundation, Florida Legislature, and the National Association of Realtors. He is co-author of the undergraduate labor economics text, CONTEMPORARY LABOR ECONOMICS, 11E as well as the annual UNION MEMBERSHIP AND EARNINGS DATA BOOK: COMPLIATIONS FROM THE CURRENT POPULATION SURVEY. He is included in WHO'S WHO IN ECONOMICS, 4E which includes the 1,200 most frequently cited economists. Dr. Macpherson received his undergraduate degree and Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.

Strumpf has been fielding calls on the National Grammar Hot Line for more than 25 years, telling callers how to make their subjects agree with their verbs and tell the difference between "who" and "whom." Thus many of the examples in this thick but highly readable grammar handbook come from questions—sometimes rather charming ones—posed by callers. With the help of editor and writer Douglas, Strumpf guides the grammar-challenged reader through the parts of speech, then demonstrates how to dissect sentences, from the simplest to the most complex. His clear-cut guidelines offer some flexibility: he grants permission to end sentences with prepositions and to use the passive voice. On other points, however, like the ban on split infinitives, the rules remain intractable. Fellow grammarians will find much to argue with, from Strumpf's insistence on the interchangeability of "that" and "which" to the use of abbreviations in print. It's easy to sympathize with the idea that network broadcasters should be required to observe the rules of good grammar, but some of his pet peeves, such as overused adjectives and vulgar interjections, seem just, well, peevish. Though it will almost certainly be overshadowed by the buzz-carrying Eats, Shoots & Leaves, Strumpf's handbook does convey the basics of grammar well enough to be of great use to any casual writer.

Excellent and enjoyable resource!

Excellent grammar book! I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants more detailed information and the bigger picture about American English. I especially like the way this book and its chapters are organized. Also, the writers never assume that a question is stupid, and the tone that is used throughout the entire book creates only a positive experience for readers. Also, clearly written and easy to understand, this book has a lot of topics that I haven't seen in others. I especially learned a lot more about using the correct case with abbreviated clauses. I also gleaned some more insight about various vocabulary rules (i.e, such as the confused suffixes -able and -ible) and word pairs that I never knew had different definitions (i.e. attorney versus lawyer), and some interesting cases of "eponyms." Even more, the writers are informative and unpretentious. They also provide unusual facts about some words, as well as some historical information about the English language, which I found enjoyable. I could go on and on with only praise for this book. I jotted down a lot of notes while reading it because of its simple, yet detailed and engaging style. The detailed explanations the authors employ were far more understandable and engaging for me than many other grammar books that I've read recently. I read every page. Whether you already know a lot about grammar or are new to some of the technicalities and confusing exceptions to the grammar rules that go hand-in-hand with the English language, I hope you enjoy it as much as I.

The best grammar book you will ever own - for both native and non-native speakers

As a writer and an ESL teacher, I am always looking for great books on English grammar.

With this book, I have found that. And more.

This book is the most thorough book on English grammar I have ever found. It also includes the most accurate English usage. One might expect all grammar books to include only the 'most accurate English usage', but this is not true. I have other grammar books that include only 'common parlance' and not the 'strictly correct' usage.

Students need to know both - what is correct and what people actually use.

For writers, teachers and interested persons whose native language is English, this book is invaluable - meaning, that its personal value for me is so high I cannot put a price on it. The value of this book extends way beyond its book price. It is a book you will want to keep for years.

In fact, this is the first grammar book I have purchased since college, (a 'few' years ago).

For ESL students (such as those I personally teach), this book is helpful because it is the most thorough reference they will ever need.

I mention ESL students but I want to add a caveat.

A beginner ESL student may find this book too thorough for their current needs. However, a student who is returning to ESL studies OR a student who is a very quick learner OR who has academic English in mind, will find this book a MUST HAVE.

Language is the key to everything

I read something years ago to the effect that "When a nation begins its decline, language is the first thing to go.". I always use grammar as a litmus test for determining the slower-thinking people. Those who pick up buzzwords and use too much doublespeak are the slower-witted. Then I know how to deal with that person.
This book is very helpful in avoiding errors as best I can. Also, language appreciation is required to enjoy good jokes and once again, the lack of understanding of the fine points of jokes also indicates the slower wit.

Not a story, just a boring list of possible stories

This book has absolutely no story. It is a laundry list of possible foes that the hulk could face...if he were part of a story. We all enjoy following a hero through a narrative that ends with a climactic battle; this is not that. I think the best use of this book will be letting our child cut the pictures out or color on them, since again it has as much narrative as a coloring book.

The origins of Graph Theory date back to Euler (1736) with the solution of the celebrated 'Koenigsberg Bridges Problem'; and to Hamilton with the famous 'Trip around the World' game (1859), stating for the first time a problem which, in its most recent version – the 'Traveling Salesman Problem' -, is still the subject of active research. Yet, it has been during the last fifty years or so―with the rise of the electronic computers―that Graph theory has become an indispensable discipline in terms of the number and importance of its applications across the Applied Sciences. Graph theory has been especially central to Theoretical and Algorithmic Computer Science, and Automatic Control, Systems Optimization, Economy and Operations Research, Data Analysis in the Engineering Sciences. Close connections between graphs and algebraic structures have been widely used in the analysis and implementation of efficient algorithms for many problems, for example: transportation network optimization, telecommunication network optimization and planning, optimization in scheduling and production systems, etc.

The primary objectives of GRAPHS, DIO�DS AND SEMIRINGS: New Models and Algorithms are to emphasize the deep relations existing between the semiring and dio�d structures with graphs and their combinatorial properties, while demonstrating the modeling and problem-solving capability and flexibility of these structures. I like this book. The content is excellent -- something most computer scientists should read if they get the chance. Unfortunately, its overshadowed by the poor printing of the copy I received. The type is grainy and pale, and I find it hard to read. Its not my particular copy, as Amazon were kind enough to let me exchange it, and the new copy is just as bad. And Springer wouldn't respond to attempts to ask them about the problem. Its pretty a pretty disappointing attitude to take with such an expensive purchase, and I will think twice before buying a book from Springer again. I could comment more on the contents, but I personally wouldn't buy this book without checking the copy I was going to receive was printed properly.

A "Must" Read....

I have added Judge Buergenthal to my list of most desired dinner partners and in fact, he is at the top of the list.

His book is mesmerizing and relates how he was torn from his family during the Holocaust, thrown into the concentration camps, yet he triumphed over all the atrocities and managed to survive and later became reunited with his mother, who also survived another concentration camp.

He is an amazing man and after his studies, devoted his adult life to international and human rights law and went on to become a Judge on the International Court of Justice in The Hague, a position he held until 2010.

And then on the absolute first page... in the very first sentences... was my answer... stated eloquently... and sparsely... yet with great strength. And this was a harbinger of the powerful yet "delicate" style that this entire masterpiece would be presented in. The forward written my NOBEL PEACE PRICE WINNER and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel states: "ARE THERE RULES TO HELP A SURVIVOR DECIDE THE BEST TIME TO BEAR WITNESS TO HISTORY? WHICH IS BETTER: TO DARE TO LOOK DIRECTLY INTO THE BLINDING PRESENT, NO MATTER HOW PAINFUL, OR TO AWAIT THE DETACHMENT OF HINDSIGHT-WHICH, BEING LESS PAINFUL, IS MORE OBJECTIVE?"

Before detailing the entire horrific journey of a boy who when he wasn't even six-years-old yet... was forced with his family from their home into a Jewish ghetto in Poland and saw all his childhood friends massacred by the Nazi's... before he even arrived at the reincarnation of hell itself... the actual concentration camps. By the time this young Jewish German child was ten-years-old he found himself in the infamous Auschwitz... one of the Nazi concentration camps. He was separated from his parents... his Father was murdered and his Mother he didn't see again... until a miraculous reunion years after the war. The question is how did this child survive? A combination of "luck"... protective parents in the beginning... and the guile of an abandoned animal with no alternative but to grow up quicker than nature had ever intended. But let's jump ahead to the present... and the knowledge of what type of man this "LUCKY-CHILD" became... and it is this knowledge that adds such an additional unrelenting luster to this incredible story.

Thomas Buergenthal received law degrees from NYU and Harvard Law School and is currently the American judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. This former child Holocaust survivor... who actually spent years in a living hell... has risen from the literal ashes of the worst atrocities known to mankind... and become a shining beacon of light for all humanity to see.

The author's writing uses a restraint that is almost hard to believe... yet he still pulls no punches. At his weakest times during his ordeal... when other prisoners collapsed... and laid down and died... or were mowed down with heartless Nazi bullets... he refused to quit and stated: "IF I GIVE UP, THEY WILL HAVE WON, I KEPT MUTTERING TO MYSELF. STAYING ALIVE HAD BECOME A GAME I PLAYED AGAINST HITLER, THE SS, AND THE NAZI KILLING MACHINE." The reader must remember that this story is being written sixty-years after the fact... and must acknowledge the lofty judicial position the author has attained... and so one time the reader is surprised... and speaking for myself... I don't how he controlled even his internal emotions... then or now... when after the war and his liberation... a long and complicated road led him back to Germany in December 1946 at the age of twelve-and-a-half-years old... and he was living in the midst of town folk who most assuredly had been part of the Nazi war machine. "... ON SUNDAYS, WHEN ENTIRE GERMAN FAMILIES WOULD PASS OUR HOUSE ON THEIR WAY TO AND FROM THEIR WALKS. I WOULD OBSERVE THEM FROM OUR BALCONY WITH ENVY AND HATRED. HERE WERE FATHERS AND MOTHERS, GRANDFATHERS AND GRANDMOTHERS, WALKING WITH THEIR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN - PEOPLE WHO, FOR ALL I KNEW, HAD KILLED MY FATHER AND GRANDPARENTS! AS I CONTEMPLATED THESE SCENES OF HAPPY GERMANS ENJOYING THEIR LIVES AS IF NOTHING HAD HAPPENED IN THE RECENT PAST, I LONGED TO HAVE A MACHINE GUN MOUNTED ON THE BALCONY SO I COULD DO TO THEM WHAT THEY HAD DONE TO MY FAMILY. IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME TO GET OVER THESE SENTIMENTS AND TO RECOGNIZE THAT SUCH INDISCRIMINATE ACTS OF VENGEANCE WOULD NOT BRING MY FATHER OR GRANDPARENTS BACK TO LIFE. IT TOOK ME MUCH LONGER TO REALIZE THAT ONE CANNOT HOPE TO PROTECT MANKIND FROM CRIMES SUCH AS THOSE THAT WERE VISITED UPON US UNLESS ONE STRUGGLES TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF HATRED AND VIOLENCE THAT INVARIABLY LEADS TO EVER MORE SUFFERING BY INNOCENT HUMAN BEINGS."

A remarkable story... and a remarkable man!

I rarely read this type of book.....

But once I picked it up I found I couldn't put it down. The story of how a 10 year old beat the odds and became the man he did managed to grab my attention and hold it until the end of the book. What he did to survive, the mind and soul that kept him going even at the darkest hour.

These horrible things made his a man who has work hard and made today's world better.

The book is written with honesty, so there is death and horrible things talked about. However, it is written in a way that is understated and in ways that would allow for younger readers to comprehend but bot be overcome by the violence.

Presents a collection of readings which introduce the study of martial behaviors in a cross-cultural context. The subject matter ranges from a consideration of the warclub as weapon and status symbol among the chiefdoms of the American Southwest at the time of European contact to contemporary ritual warfare in the highlands of Bolivia.

All over the world, warriors have left their mark on culture. Their codes of behavior become the basis of diplomacy, models of service, and courage in the protection of social institutions. Chivalry in the West arose from the codes of the noble knights and ^IBushido^R, (The Way of the Warrior), the Bible of the Samurai, still serves as the basis of etiquette in modern Japan. In practically every society myths and tales of culture heroes who are warriors are important in the enculturation and socialization of children. Martial arts, which are stylized behaviors displaying techniques related to those practiced on the battlefield, are considered here to be more about culture, art, and history than about fighting.

As much stew as you can make from very few oysters

The martial arts, variously defined, are certainly worth scholarly examination. The editor has done his best to provide a survey of the social science literature on the subject. Unfortunately it falls a little short of the mark.
This isn't entirely his fault. There just isn't that much in the scholarly literature on the subject. He had to go pretty far afield in subject matter and in time to fill a volume. And it shows.
Some of the articles are interesting from a social science perspective but have absolutely nothing to do with combatives, hoplology or the like. The piece on Tanzanian dance competition, for instance, is fascinating. But the author demonstrates in the first couple pages that the practice has no martial past.
Others, such as the first article in the book and the two articles by Donohue suffer, I fear from two common sins of anthropology. The authors ignore that which does not agree with their theses, retain a tad too much scholarly detachment when investigating exceptionally personal and transformative practices, make universal statements based on a very limited cultural milieu, and seem to have trouble taking believing that practitioners of cultural practices have insight into their own lives and experience.
Other articles such as the ones on the Ayarrs and somatic nationalism in Indian wrestling hit the sweet spot of hoplology and social science scholarship.
The book could have been better. But given the material the editor had to work with it is a decent effort.
