Sociolinguistics sounds like linguini....

Janet Holmes is a New Zealander who teaches upper division courses, is a language expert, is interested in gender studies, social-cultural changes in society, and in the English language as an expression of who we-you-are. Most recently, I used the book to gain clarity about the difference between a national language and an official language. If you have any interest in the English Only movement, this book is for you. How can you fight EO? By learning about what it means to have a national and official language. Enjoy this book. Knowledge is power. An Introduction to Sociolinguistics (Learning about Language)If you want to look deeper at forces behind language use and disuse, this is a book for you. Invaluable, and now that I have reading investment in the book, I feel it is an invaluable resource. It can be read by anyone. It is a pleasure to read about the social implications of languages, and get a glimpse of languages from the views and perspectives of the real users, you-me.

good intro

janet holmes does a fine job introducing sociolinguistics. i feel she takes a good mix from all over the world and synthesizes the result. i do feel that her arguments about gender and the english language are clearly activist-based. and i have never bought the african american vernacular english (aave) argument ~ although many notable sociolinguists accept it. i have worked with too many african americans to blanket categorize their language into one kettle.

i would recommend this book if you need to read for school or personal education.

Wish someone would do a better job writing about these three amazing men, their relationship as well as the company they created

I was an executive at Intel from 1984-1999 (Corp. Vice President) and had the honor of knowing Noyce, Moore and Grove. I found the book odd. It was very superficial about so many things and then would go in depth on other things. The section on Andy's early life was overly detailed while there was not enough about Gordon. Frankly, the book feels lazy to me. It felt like Malone just wrote up thing he could easily find. He was suppose to have access to Intel's archives for whatever that is worth. We were thought not to keep much because of legal issues. There were also a number of factual errors.
I did benefit from learning more about the early years at Fairchild.
Hated the title by the way. It is worth reading this book as long as you realize that it is just a piece of the story of these three amazing men and even less a history of Intel.

An interesting look at the sacrifices made to develop microcircuit technology shared dedication not only by the Intel founders and senior management but by the technicians who worked endless hours to achieve the goals driven by the consumer.
A factual account of the development of the integrated circuit industry. Many sections of this book are drawn from other published sources such as books and newspapers. Not much new information is presented to a reader who has been part of the field of IC development but very good source of insight for those that have little exposure.

Engaging but chaotic

The book is entertaining and engaging to read. However, there is too much time spent on some sections without apparent reason (e.g. a lot on Noyce, almost nothing on Moore, then again a ton on Grove). Also, the narrative constantly confuses by jumping back and forth in time. One is often unsure whether an event being described occurred before, after, or concurrently with the flow of others. Nevertheless, recommended.

In the late 1980s, in the USA 7 percent of farm workers were "illegal immigrants" a.k.a. undocumented workers. By 2000, the majority of farm workers in the USA were undocumented. There are millions of farm workers in the USA; most make below minimum wage. This data is from this excellent book. The point of the book is join a CSA, visit the farm, and get to know the owner and the workers.

Painters converted their canvases into arenas for action and gesture, dancers embraced pure movement over narrative, performance artists staged “happenings” in which anything could happen, poets wrote words determined by chance.

In this tumultuous period, a composer of experimental music began a spiritual quest to know himself better. His earnest inquiry touched thousands of lives and created controversies that are ongoing. He devised unique concerts—consisting of notes chosen by chance, randomly tuned radios, and silence—in the service of his absolute conviction that art and life are one inseparable truth, a seamless web of creation divided only by illusory thoughts.

What empowered John Cage to compose his incredible music—and what allowed him to inspire tremendous transformations in the lives of his fellow artists—was Cage’s improbable conversion to Zen Buddhism. This is the story of how Zen saved Cage from himself.

Where the Heart Beats is the first book to address the phenomenal importance of Zen Buddhism to John Cage’s life and to the artistic avant-garde of the 1950s and 1960s. About the Author
An acclaimed art critic, columnist, and editor, KAY�LARSON began her career in journalism in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at The Real Paper, then served as an associate editor at ARTnews and an art critic for the Village Voice. She was the art critic for New York magazine for fourteen years, and has been a frequent contributor to the New York Times. In 1994, she entered Zen practice at a Buddhist monastery in upstate New York. Though Larson has written for many types of publications, Where the Heart Beats is her first book.

A Unifying Perspective of the Influence of Zen and the Emergence of the Contemporary Art Scene in America

If you ever wondered why the three items in the subtitle relate, wonder no more. Rather be curious enough to delve into it more deeply. Clearly written with just a bit of extraneous rmeandering this book had me "So maybe that's why I favor this direction rather than that in the art world..I never connected the two before or thought about connecting them." Of course I am a Californian and was familiar with the names, art, music, dance and Zen Center of San Fransico all of which I referred to and put into context for me. A definite buy whether you like John Cage's stuph or not, have an interest in the influence of Buddhism in the 20th century on American creativity.

Finally someone took the time and research to write about the full life JOhn Cage had. Not just to focus on one thing about him. The problem with writing about just one piece of who John was means you leave out all the reasons he created his art. Everything about him from his upbringing, personal life, spiritual journey to mental health was part of the musical pieces we all enjoy to this day. You cannot truly write about him without writing about everything.

By the end of this book you discover John Cage and end with a much better understanding of each piece of music he created. You will feel like you actually know him. It is an amazing book, very well written and laid out.Very insightful.
