A must read for every elected official...

Illegal immigration has dominated the political debate for more than a decade. Everyday, individuals we know nothing about freely walk across our border and settle in our towns and cities. Among them is a criminal element from which our government can't protect us. This is a story about a woman who defended herself and won!

A Chance Meeting that proved to be amazing

Having met Christine Hand-Gonzales briefly in the Atlanta Airport awaiting a plane, she told me about her book. I could not wait to read it on my Kindle. Having just finished it, I am feeling many things. I realize I must be more alert, having once been threatened by a gunman many years ago. But also this book explains legal systems, immigration problems and of course the controversial Sanctuary Cities and how they seem to enable illegal immigrants. How our laws for this need to be better enforced. Being a firm believer in gun for personal safety I appreciate how the "carry" law is and should be allowed. I appreciate this book so much and all the valuable information and the need for me to personally be more aware. I also believe faith is a contributing factor to our reactions and in that same light I believe our chance and very short meeting in the airport and the mention I was from Nebraska lead me to book that should be read by all women. Thank you so much Christine.

This book leads us to the water....

I appreciate this book for clearly laying out the compelling reasons, arising from the author's real experience, that we all have to accept responsibility, to plan carefully and then to take action to insure the protection of ourselves and our loved ones.

By presenting this well documented trail of failures in the execution of our immigration policies missteps in our legal systems and the destructive results, despite good intentions, of people who create "sanctuaries", the author has brought the tragic consequences into the light as she traces the path her assailant followed to reach her back door that morning.

Surviving her horrifying ordeal, she shares, in precise detail, what she did and why she survived. I have sent the link for this book to my daughter with the hope that, although I have led her to the water many times, this time, with this compelling story, she will take a drink... and take action.

About the Author

Alasdair Allan is a senior research fellow in Astronomy at the University of Exeter. As part of his work there he is building a distributed peer-to-peer network of telescopes which, acting autonomously, will reactively schedule observations of time-critical events. On the side, Alasdair runs a small technology consulting business writing bespoke software and building open hardware, and is currently developing a series of iPhone applications to monitor and manage cloud based services and distributed sensor networks.

Good, but steep learning curve

This is a well written book, but it pushes you into deep water a little too quickly for my taste. Because the SDK provides so much boilerplate code, writing the proverbial "Hello World" app is very easy, but understanding what is going on under the hood is another matter. If you are already familiar with Mac development, Cocoa and Objective-C, you'll be just fine, but even an experienced C++ programmer (as am I) should read something like Cocoa and Objective-C: Up and Running: Foundations of Mac, iPhone, and iPod touch programming either before or simultaneous to reading this book. The main problem is that the object part of Objective-C is based on the Smalltalk object syntax, not C++. The concepts are similar, but the syntax will seem strange. So clean your reading glasses, and buckle up. The nice part about this is that when you're done, you will be familiar with development for Mac, iPhone and iPad.

Outdated, but still relevant!

This is actually one of the two books that I've come to greatly appreciate in my quest to enter the iPhone development game (the other being "Programming in Objective-C 2.0" by Stephen G. Kochan, also available here on Amazon for an excellent price). The printing date puts it at March 2010, which sadly falls a few month before the release of iOS 4.0. Fortunately, however, the vast majority of the example code given within the pages of this tome are unaffected by the iOS revision.

I've been playing around with iOS development for the past couple of months (I've probably got around forty or fifty days of actual coding time under my belt), and thanks to this book, the mystery behind NavigationViewControllers and TableViewControllers are almost a thing of the past.

Interestingly enough, what puts this book ahead of others that I've read (e.g., Beginning iOS 4 Application Development and Sam's Teach Yourself iPhone Development in 24 Hours) is that it teaches those two particular things without skirting around them. It may lack color screenshots, but I'll gladly trade those for having more coverage on one of the most heavily used model schemes in the iOS game.

In conclusion, I can't recommend this book enough. Code samples are still valid, the explanation of said code is outstanding, and it's just overall high quality work.

Good introduction, other skills needed

For an O'Reilly book, I was surprised that this book had some code that would not run (the samples are on the book's website), and there were some critical points that were not mentioned which I found elsewhere. Previous O'reilly books were better written and the code ran without issues. The author places his e-mail address in the front of the book but does not respond to e-mail messages. O'Reilly has a forum for discussion of many of its other books but not this book. The forum could be a great place to get help.

The introduction to iPhone Programming is done fairly well. I think the reader's time is well spent. There are some tips in the book which were certainly helpful. Keep in mind this is the only intro level iPhone Programming book I have read. The small improvements needed in this book leave me recommending someone to look elsewhere to learn iPhone Programming. At least until a new edition is released.

For someone new to programming, the typical path seems to be learn C first, then Objective-C and Cocoa, then iPhone programming. If you do not know these other related languages, the code in the book will not be understandable. I did have a little experience with C++ so the code was not totally foreign.

Dr. Dobb's Journal recently wrote a little about iPhone development. Their main thought was that it took quite a bit of learning to get up and running. Since Cocoa is built from Smalltalk and C, it takes more time to learn than something like Visual Basic. But don't get discouraged - iPhone development seems worthwhile.

Slanted: too much an adverstisement for GT

I've been fooling with tube guitar amps for decades. I more or less know what I am doing with them, and I've found most of the information that I want on line. But I thought it would be nice to have a book or two to consult when my wife or daughter was at the computer, when I was tinkering with an amp, or when I just didn't feel like sitting at a desk and looking at screen. Based on its appearance and description, I chose this book. Bad decision.

This book insulted me. I felt used and abused by the author, and that has perhaps tainted this review. I expected a comprehensive and useful guide. That is what this book should have been and what the format and price -and the use of "THE" in the title -- seemed to promise. Instead, I dropped $33 on a big, glossy advertisement for the author's "Groove Tube" tube-selling operation and, by extension, the manufacturers who buy tubes from him.

To make a happy customer, promise less and deliver more. This book went the other way.

Yes, some of the content is useful and interesting, written passages as well as photos. But the section describing amp brands and histories is rendered woefully incomplete as the author veers and swerves through it to make opportunities to refer to himself and his tubes and pimp for the manufacturers that buy from him. (Be wary of authors who never miss opportunities to tell you how important and knowledgeable they are. Quality of content should speak for itself.) Redundancies abound, further wasting the reader's time and valuable space that could have been used to at least mention other manufacturers or give some details about those that deserved more than a paragraph or two. But then, perhaps those manufacturers will yield to the pressure, become Groove Tube customers, and thus buy space in the next edition.

The technical section lacks depth and development, apparently a patchwork of reprinted magazine articles, disconnected one to the next, but with more shameless plugs for Groove Tubes inserted here and there. Many of the articles are reasonably well written and helpful in themselves and would be perhaps be a pleasure to find in a magazine. But overall, the technical section is less coherent and developed than one would expect in the sort of publication that this presents itself to be. Again, the book seems to promise more but delivers less.

Others have commented on many the schematics being illegible or inaccurate.

Perhaps the greatest disappointment is the section comparing tube types. Only tubes marketed by Groove Tubes are included, and they are all, of course, listed by their Groove Tube catalog name and are all shown photographed with the big GT logo prominently displayed. If you are looking for descriptions or comparisons of raved-about tubes by Tung-Sol or Svetlana or the like, you can do much better on the Internet, thank you. You won't find them here.

The book has its good points. It is big. It is glossy. The spiral binding is user-friendly. You will get some insights into the hows and whys of tube amp history and evolution - but then, the book is not unique in that. It has lots of great photos - but even here there are annoying redundancies and omissions: some things described in a way that makes them intriguing are not depicted while other things are shown again and again. Did I mention redundancies?

This book might be a good addition to the library of someone who already has lots of books about tube amps and has room on the shelves for more. But if you are looking for just one or two more or less comprehensive books on the subject, look elsewhere.

I was not happy with my purchase and returned the book.

Poor Image Quality Ruins Book's One Attribute

Aspen Pittman, whom I have met and talked to at several industry conventions such as NAMM and AES, is not a highly technical individual: in fact I doubt he even understands basic electronics. His book is therefore a compilation of a lot of schematics and (on Fenders) parts layouts for guitar amplifiers, and a few articles written by various tech writers, some of which are of merit and some of which aren't.
The schematics are not very legible and many contain known errors. For this price, he could at least get that part right. I don't recommend this book unless you cannot find a needed schematic or layout anywhere else.

The Tube Amp Book - Good, but not a DIY guide

I am building a 50 watt tube amp based off of Marshall & Fender designs; somewhat of a hybrid. I bought this for the schematics and such. The book is more of a history of tube amps, info on the parts/tubes & schematics, but it is not a DIY book. If you do not know what you are doing and you want to build your own amp, this book will not be a help. If you already know how to build one and need schematics and would also like to know the history of amps and the parts, this is good book for that. Also as stated in previous reviews, the schematics can be very hard to read, some are handwritten or bad copies, but with some work, can be read.

best book on Spiritual baptist faith to-date

I am a new member of the spiritual Baptist faith (Laventille, Trinidad) since 2004. This book is the best book on the religion and the social environment that surrounds it. From the beginning, his personal experiences of racism and exclusion during his research, gives you an idea of the defensive nature of the people, because of the many persecutions received at the hands of Europeans in the post slavery and post colonial time. Also because alot of people came and stole knowledge from our African religions to either suppress them or create misinformation in the public. However this book tells it as it is.
It does not give you everything on the religions but he gives a true picture of what really happens.
He is right when he admits that he can only give account for so much, because for both orisha and baptist you must have the spiritual eye to understand what is happening during worship. So unless you have that gift to see what spirits or saints manifest, or operate, when certain seal are written, or songs are sung, all you would see is a theatrical play or dance. Kenneth was privileged to be among certain priest and has given privileged information. He has been true to the 'faith'.
I have never been to an orisha feast but from what other members say, Kenneth re-affirms. If you buy this book you should also buy 'The Spiritual Baptist Faith by Rev Patricia Stephens.and ----- Reclaiming African Religions in Trinidad by Frances Henry.
They all look at the religions from different perspectives. Buy them all if you can!
I am a Baptist! Why buy this book? Because the traditional ways are being cut out and are not seen any more.
Many leaders have died, not writing anything, and have taken their knowledge to the grave.
Others Baptist, trying to prove themselves Christians to the public, have removed certain elements from their worship.
Change is inevitable.

This book has helped me in successfully carrying out an assignmemt for college work. I will recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning or understanding the baptist religion. Kenneth Anthony Lum explains the religion in topic form and very vividly, so there can be no problem in understanding what is read.

Love Huxley

I generally don't like short stories but I gave this book a try due to having a literary soft spot for Aldous Huxley (and an admiration for his grandfather, Thomas). Although this was not my favorite Aldous Huxley book -- perhaps because it consists of short stories -- and although I disliked the characters and the endings to the stories, I can only credit the writer's ability to make me feel these emotions. As always, the writing moves along well and has interesting twists to keep the plots going along at a good clip, despite my distaste for the people and the events. The man was, simply, an excellent writer.

Huxley is wonderful.

I have read quite a bit by Huxley, but never his short stories. Many of these are somewhat humorous and almost all end with a wonderfully anti climactic kind of shock, not to spoil them. I unfortunately missed the intended message or theme for a couple if the stories, but reading it was still a pleasure and that is not why I gave four stars. The four stars result from the simple fact that there are perhaps a little more than ten very minor non detracting typos or scan errors in the public domain version of this book.

Down, down, down, down.... He saw a vision of himself descending from one circle of the inferno to the next--from a darkness full of wind and hail to an abyss of stinking mud."

A five story collection, first published in 1922. Considerably more sustained and polished than the stories in Limbo - Short Stories by Aldous Huxley.

The Gioconda Smile is about a man with an invalid for a wife, a young lower-class woman for a mistress, and a spinsterish friend, Miss Spence, whom he finds he has underestimated.

Permutaions among the Nightingales is a story in the form of a play, where everyone seems to be in love with the wrong person:

"I perceive that the supreme quality in the human soul is effrontery. Genius in the man of action is simply the apotheosis of charlatanism. Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Mr. Gladstone, Lloyd George--what are they? Just ordinary human beings projected through the magic lantern of a prodigious effrontery and so magnified to a thousand times larger than life. Look at me. I am far more intelligent than any of these fabulous figures; my sensibility is more refined than theirs, I am morally superior to any of them. And yet, by my lack of charlatanism, I am made less than nothing. My qualities are projected through the wrong end of a telescope and the world perceives me far smaller than I really am. But the world--who cares about the world? The only people who matter are the women.

Get the book but not the study guide.

Let me just start by saying that the book Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets by John Murphy is an excellent book; truely a classic which I highly reccomend. However, I found the study guide to be a waste of my time. It is filled with a bunch of quizes which are vaguely worded and won't do you much if any good. I guess they can help you to see how well you comprehended the chapters, but it has no supplemental information or sumaries on important material. It's just a bunch of multiple choice and matching. There was no further understanding of the material in my experience. Save your money, just buy the textbook, not the studyguide.

Waste of time

John Murphy is a market technician with well deserved notoriety. The textbook, Technical Analysis of Financial Markets is excellent, the workbook is garbage. Poor questions, unclear statements and vaguely annotated charts muddle the text. The textbook covers 19 plus chapters, the workbook only goes to chapter 12. Disappointing.
