Don't ignore this book

I've been following Cal Newport's ideas for a while now, so when I learned that he was coming out with a book, I pre-ordered it from Amazon. I was not disappointed. If you have a child or know someone in college who is trying to figure out what to do with their life, or even if you're north of fifty and still wonder what you'll be when you grow up, then this book is for you. So Good They Can't Ignore You, is so good that you shouldn't ignore it.

The central premise that sets this book apart from so much life advice that is out on the market is that following your passion is terrible advice. There are two main reasons for this: first, very few people at a young age know enough about life to choose something to be really passionate about, and even if they do, they are bound to be wrong. If Steve Jobs had followed his early passion, maybe he would have made a dent in the universe as a Buddhist monk.

Second, while most people would love to have a job that allows them to be creative, make an impact on the world, and have control over how they choose to spend their time, jobs like that are rare and valuable, and the only way to get something valuable is to offer something in return. And the only way to be in a position to do that is to master a difficult skill. Passion doesn't waive the laws of economics, and if it's not difficult it won't be rare. The book cites the example of Julia, who quit a secure job in advertising to pursue her passion of teaching yoga. Armed with a 4-week course, she quit her job, began teaching, and one year later was on food stamps. Here's a hint: if a four-week course is enough to allow you to set up shop, do you think you might have a little competition?

Taking the economic model a step further, the book argues that you must develop career capital, which comprises skills, relationships and a body of work. The long and arduous process of building your capital also opens up your options and refines your own understanding of what you really like to do and what you can be good at.

Newport offers the craftsman mindset in place of the passion mindset. The passion mindset asks what the world can offer you in terms of fulfillment and fun; the craftsman mindset forces you to look inside and ask what you can offer the world. You have to create value to get value, and that takes time and deliberate practice. It's the only way to get so good that they can't ignore you. The nice benefit is that rather than being good at something because you love it, you love doing something because you've gotten good at it. (Note the similarity to Carol Dweck's growth mindset.)

What's the little idea? Another idea that Newport challenges is the common advice that you should have a big idea--set a big hairy audacious goal for your life and then work backward from it. The master plan approach certainly works for some people, but how many people do you know who have actually lived their lives that way? Instead, you should work forward from where you are, taking small steps that expand your capabilities and build up your career capital. In this way, more options and possibilities open up. Newport compares career discoveries to scientific discoveries, most of which occur in what's called the "adjacent possible", or just on the other side of the cutting edge of current knowledge.

The book is well-written. Newport emulates Malcolm Gladwell's technique of telling individual stories to illustrate the main point in each chapter. In addition, the arc of the stories follows a master story thread through the book, so that you feel like you are brought along on his quest to figure it all out.
Here comes the part I did not like about the book, and I would not devote so much space to it if the author were not an MIT PhD, just beginning his career as an assistant professor of computer science.

The methodology in the book is suspect in two ways. While its stories are the book's great strength, the plural of anecdote is not data, and it's surprising how little hard data we're given. I certainly buy in because it makes sense and it matches my own life experience, but someone with a more skeptical point of view may be a tougher sell.

In at least one case, where he does use a peer-reviewed study for support, he overstates the case. Citing a paper by Amy Wrzesniewski, he states that the happiest, most passionate employees are not those who followed their passion into a position, but those who stayed around long enough to be good at what they do. If you read the actual paper, you won't find that conclusion, and in fact the author stresses that the sample size of 24 is too small to draw any firm conclusions.

That said, I strongly recommend this book to just about anyone, regardless of where you are in your career.

Decent points, very poorly argued

The basic premise of this book is thought-provoking and very relevant to so many of us struggling through career decisions. The primary point which Newport gets across is unambiguously true: finding a "passion" before setting off in your career is extremely difficult, and perhaps even counterproductive. Developing a very solid set of skills which are somewhat rare and valuable is the only way to position oneself into a meaningful job with any sort of autonomy and humanity. This is essential, especially in the competitive world we live in. And competency itself is related to self-satisfaction—perhaps even moreso than any intrinsic interests we might have. Good points.

However, the book falls flat in almost every other aspect, from the explanations, to the real-world examples, to the relevancy for the vast majority of professional laborers sitting in cubicles today. This is not surprising given Newport's background in prestige and academics, and the quite unorthodox path he's taken. This issue follows through the entire book with example after example of people and their careers that can only be characterized as esoteric and extreme. The hyper-successful individuals he profiles as examples of people happy with their careers are starkly contrasted by the obvious hubris of those he interviews who are not. There is no middle ground, which is, unfortunately, the vast majority of us, who are neither ridiculously foolhardy nor overachievers to the extreme.

This book and its author smacks of the Tim Ferriss-style cure-all self-help trash which is all born out of an unrigorous, hyped-up, TED Talk-syle, fast-food intellectualism which is so tempting to consume in the blogging age. Beware of the hype, remember this book was written in less than 6 months, work hard, and find a job you don't hate for Christ's sake.

What abou the rest of us?

First, I will say that this is an excellent book. In a world of so many different ways to make a living, this is a fresh new path to follow. It really is good advice. Just because people love doing things doesn't mean that people will pay you for it. The trick is to get really good at something and then people will come to you. Essentially, when people come to you, you are negotiating from a position of power and you can set whatever terms will make you happy. You not a morning person? Say you'll work from 12-8. Don't like Tuesdays? Take that day off. It all boils down to having control over your own life. It's the same idea about an encyclopedia vs Wikipedia. The more successful one is the one where anyone can add anything anytime they wanted. They're not even being paid, they just really want to add an article about mustard at 3am.

However, I started getting an elitist feel from the book about halfway through, and it's the reason I gave it only 3 stars. The people he talks about in his book are those buisness/computer people who: A)Know how to start and run a business, B)Can work from home (all they need is a computer), and/or C)have a skill that makes hundreds if not thousands of dollars an hour. Not to mention, most of them have PhD's. One person he talks about started a music company, sold it for 22 million, donated all the money, globe trotted for a few years, then started another freakin' company. Would this book be worth something to a nurse? A teacher? A police officer? Or are these people who have followed their "passion" and this book is just for a select number of people who's highly paid skills are transferable?

Nicholas Weiler,after a long human resources career with General Electric, is now an independent consultant. In the 1990s he designed a new worldwide Leadership Development Program that GE has introduced in the United States, Europe, Asia, Mexico and South America. He is the author of the Macmillan Executive Book-of-the-Month selection Reality and Career Planning. He holds a B.A. from Fordham University and an M.A. in psychology from Washington University. He resides with his family in Fairfield County, Connecticut.

Stephen Schoonover, M.D., left a faculty position at Harvard Medical School to head his own consulting firm. His corporate clients include a number of Fortune 500 companies. He is the author of Changing Ways, on managing organizational change, and Managing to Relate, which looks at interpersonal skills at work. He is a graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard Medical School, with board certification in psychiatry and neurology. He lives on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

If you are experiencing career changes, I would highly recommend this book. It has lots of great information, but it is not a quick fix. If you do the work (taking the time to do the presented activities), you will find some answers and be in a better position to assess your career goals and direction.

Practical, sample-oriented introduction

This book does exactly what it says, it provides a practical, sample-oriented introduction to developing drivers the Microsoft Windows Driver Foundation way.

The driver code for the samples used in the book, tools needed for developing drivers, and reference documentation are all downloadable (all 2.5GB of it, but it's free) from Microsoft. If you're like me and spend only a small part of your time working on drivers (I'm trying to interface a USB gadget), this is a great guide to WDF as well as to Windows I/O techniques and interface best practices. To get started, you can just hack the samples provided, as the authors intend. WDF looks after plug-n-play and power management, so it makes it easy to develop a basic user-mode USB driver like mine.

If you're a driver specialist, are writing kernel drivers, or have drivers to port from a different operating system, then the book is a detailed reference for moving to WDF. There's a lot of abstraction in the Windows way of doing drivers, and understanding the abstractions helps you write and debug your driver, so this book does a comprehensive job of explaining the relevant abstractions as you go along.

For example, if you're already an expert in the COM programming model, so that it's obvious to you why you need to implement the IUnknown methods, then you can likely skip most of Chapter 18. For the rest of us, we need the how-to advice and the examples, so there's a good reason the book is close to 900 pages :).

It's two, maybe three books in one.

The content of the book feels more accessible than the online WDK documentation. It does cover the material, but each chapter is divided into three parts: stuff common between the kernel driver framework and user mode driver framework, stuff about the kernel driver framework, and stuff about the user mode driver framework. The authors probably had a hard time organizing the material, but the book should have been structured into those three parts. For example, I'm not currently interested in developing a user mode driver and I found the user mode driver material distracting.

This book is more reference than how-to. Maybe the authors should have structured the book like some of the Linux driver books: develop a real device driver.

Great book on WDF, but not for learning Windows driver development

I found this book well organized and useful for learning the Windows Driver Foundation. This book, however, is not a complete book for learning Windows Driver Development. Unfortunately, the book makes the claim that it is for newbies. This cannot be the case, because it doesn't give much in-depth information about Windows driver and kernel concepts, such as how memory is described (Neither I/O, buffered I/O or MDL's), different execution contexts, IRQL levels and what can and cannot be done in these levels, and basic IRP and I/O Manager concepts. Beginners will still have to start by learning WDM from a book like "Programming the Windows Driver Model". You just can't expect to succeed using WDF if you don't first have a firm grasp on WDM.

I think this book provides an organized approach to learning WDF. It is, however, not a book for leaning Windows driver development basics. I actually thought the book read very well and I'm not a fast reader at all.

If you own a Mauser m1896, it's a must own

VERY detailed book about the Swedish Mauser M96. The rifle is one of the nicest (if not THE best) Mauser bolt action made and the book does it justice. if your a collector, it's a must, if you just want info on your own M96, it's also a must. It details date of manufacture by serial number, explanations on ammo, rifle accessories, variations in production, M96's used by Finnish forces...and a lot more.
It's more than enough to answer any question I have about my M96, and will be a great tool for adding on to my collection, since I plan on getting at least one more. Dana Jones did Mauser collectors a huge service with this book and I'm glad I own a copy.

She blinded me with science

"An Experiment with an Air Pump," by Shelagh Stephenson, is an intriguing play that takes place in two different time periods: 1799 and 1999. The book notes that the play was first performed at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester in 1998; a biographic note on the author states that she was born in Northumberland and has written a number of plays for BBC Radio.
The play switches back and forth between the two time periods. The 1799 story is about scientist and political radical Joseph Fenwick, his family, servant, and professional associates. The 1999 story looks at a married couple in which the wife is a scientist, and at 2 of their associates. The intent is for four of the actors to double and each play one character in each time period.
"Experiment" makes use of a play-within-a-play motif as some of the 1799 characters work on mounting a little production. There's also a tip of the hat to the epistolary novel as letters between two characters are read as part of the dialogue. Some of the issues addressed in the play are gender roles, creativity, class oppression, "Englishness" (i.e. English ethnic/national identity), cross-cultural contact, the role of the scientist in society, scientific ethics, and female beauty standards. There are some really cutting lines as the characters explore these issues. Complex and thought-provoking, this is a really remarkable play.

Inspiring, Sensitive, Well Written

Misty Copeland's story is an inspiring tale of overcoming a difficult childhood of poverty and rising en pointe to become a brilliant soloist with American Ballet Theater.

Misty's drill instructor (she was captain of the drill team at school) advised her to study ballet at the Boys and Girls Club, which became her salvation. She started at the late age of 13. But she was a prodigy, with natural strength sufficient to graduate to toe shoes after just three months of instruction. Ballet was her element, she became devoted to the art form, and was given unstinting support from the owner of the studio. She went to live with her teacher and her husband for two years, in the only stable and prosperous home she had known. But a custody struggle between her mother and her ballet teacher ended with Misty being returned to her mother.

However, her talent and hard work won out, and she was accepted at every summer ballet intensive ballet she auditioned for (with the exception of New York City Ballet!). She moved from the San Francisco Ballet's intensive summer to American Ballet Theater's, and was immediately encouraged by the director of the studio company, a feeder to the professional company.

The story of how Misty overcame the instability of her childhood and teenage years is told sensitively and with compelling interest. She is the first and only ballerina of color to reach soloist level in a classical ballet company, especially one of ABT's importance. All along she must overcome obstacles - of lack of confidence, of prejudice in favor of "white swans", and the universal ballet rule to have a boyish figure, while Misty was attractively feminine.

In the end, Misty is victorious, chosen to play the Firebird on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in a new ballet choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky. After surgery for a serious injury, she is back at ABT and her future is still open before her. Her story will inspire teenage dancers. Graciously, she acknowledges the help her early dance teachers gave her and the past "black swans" she met and befriended during her career. I eagerly look forward to her sequel, when she becomes a principal at ABT.

Misty Copeland - A Raw and Open Experience of a Truely Great International Ballerina

I've always loved Classical Ballet; I feel it's the most beautiful form of dance there is. It's something my wife and I share. When I met I her she had a Mikhail Baryshnikov calendar on her wall. She danced when she was very young. She introduced me to Ballet and Artistic Gymnastics, both she had done in her youth. Sadly ended by injury.

We both love to watch "So you think you can dance." as it brings some fantastic dancers to the stage and some of the wildest choreography I have ever seen. It brought us "Twitch"!

This last season we were watching as usual and I noticed a guest judge I had never seen before and I asked my wife who it was. She asked me, "You don't know who that is?" I had no idea other that she looked very serious. She said "That's Misty Copeland; one of the best ballerina's there is anywhere." I shrugged my shoulders, "OK." Her critiques were so precise and on point; every toe point; every movement; every emotion. I was like, "This dancer knows her business." I was impressed and I believe she was on for two episodes. My wife still was asking me how could you not know who she is? One thing I did know; she knows her business.

The above notes don't relate directly with her book but will. I'm married to a Latina and she told me that she wasn't always welcomed in allot of circles due to her not being white. Being white, I didn't fully get it because I wasn't raised that way. The statement "This is for the brown girls." should and probably relates to all women or men of color. Reading that made me sad but it should make every decent person sad.

Her story was a great read. It was one of a young prodigy being pushed and pulled in so many directions at a young age that tore at her feelings so drastically that it it was painful to read in some places. So many families have to endure hardships and many talented people whether it's dance, acting, other sports or academia are kept from them because there is no one there to see the talent. Those are the ones who suffer. I'm glad the Boys and Girls club was there for her and she was discovered; what a waste it would have been to have never seen such talent. Thanks Misty for giving back to those who helped get you started.

The book is very open and raw; she doesn't hold back on any of her life story. It's happy in many places and heartbreaking in others. It's a journey of a budding artist who tells her story almost from when she can remember to this year. She gives those in her life who helped her more than just credit; she showers them with praise. She admits to the reader her fears and how she overcame them (I love Krispy Kreme too). For so many to take to her, shows a spirit not found in many people no matter what race they are. In the end her family is her biggest love and that crowns the book for me.

I hope my wife and I can see her dance live one day; that would be a truly wonderful experience. That recalls the dance of Firebird with stress fractures. Most athletes would be sidelined with that. It boggles the mind how she did that.

I'll check out Firebird when I get a chance. Thanks for a great experience.

one of those books that goes to show that talent, drive, dedication and not listening to the folks who say you can't do this or be this, or shine in this light,etc.. very honest and direct book. she is breaking barriers and only getting stronger. a really strong and enlightening book.

Great story and spectacular art

Great story and spectacular art! I don't think the artist has ever played the games, though, as they draw Turians slightly wrong (they do not have front teeth, only on the sides).

Not easy

This is not easy piano -- my daughter is on her 5th year of piano lessons - she is a very good player at this point - would say definitely not a beginner at this point - can play more difficult pieces and she is 9. This book is called easy piano which would make you think it's for beginners -- it isn't. It is for someone who is well beyond my daughter's level that I described...

some pieces sound great, others in odd key or melody isn't even correct

Some of the pieces sounded great ("Do You Want To Build a Snowman?"). Some of the pieces were in an odd key, though, and in a few places there were errors in the melody. Still, overall, a genuine good product.

My Piano Students Love It

I now own 9 copies of this book. All the girls I know (elementary school through college) who have seen the movie LOVE it. My piano students are very pleased to have the music so they can play the songs. I chose this version so even the more advanced students can play the songs quickly. If they want fuller sound, it's a good time to learn improvisation with chords.
