Beautiful book, great read!

This is one of the most engaging anthologies I've ever seen or read--both as physical object and in its powerful contents. I love that each poet gets to really show off (everybody gets several pages), and I love the "poetics statements," and I love the photos. Congratulations to Nightboat Books and the editors of this fine collection. And to all the poets inside. What a beauty!!

Voyager, there are no bridges. One builds them as one walks.

In the introduction co-editor TC Tolbert quotes Gloria E. Anzald�a: "Voyager, there are no bridges. One builds them as one walks." Anzald�a's words are beautiful and evocative and empowering (thinking of myself as a 'voyager' brings goosebumps). I don't know if Tolbert had future readers in mind specifically as the quote is framed within an account of the editor's personal life experience and wish to make TTL a reality, but these words are the perfect embodiment of my voyage across the 500+ page collection of poetry and poetics statements.

My favorite aspect of TTL is the biographical emphasis on the featured poets who were encouraged to submit "manifestos" to accompany their work. Stand out personal statements come from CAConrad (of course), Drew Krewer (who wrote "I buy stuff just like everyone else"), Eric Karin ("what chimeric-cryptid will I become?"), GR Keer ("to be queer is to be queried"), j/j hastain ("cyborgian"), Jenny Johnson, Joy Ladin, Julian Talamantez Brolaski (his "Phonosemantics and the Real" is amazing), kari edwards (best), Micha C�rdenas, Monica / Nico Peck (numbered list of real poetry definitions), Trish Salah, and Zoe Tuck ("To go towards the site(s) of my confusion, fear, anger and abide there.").

About the Author
Kevin Felner, MD: Kevin Felner, MD, an assistant professor at New York University School of Medicine in New York City, is an expert in pulmonary and critical care medicine. He served a three-year fellowship at New York University Medical Center in pulmonary/critical care medicine and has taught medical students in his specialty (Department of Internal Medicine/Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care) since 2004. He has earned three Teacher of the Year awards during his tenure at NYU, including being named best teacher of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care in 2005.
Before joining the NYU teaching staff, he taught at UT Southwestern Medical School and Mount Sinai Medical School, where he participated in pilot programs introducing first- and second-year medical students to effective patient interaction.
His research on lung and respiratory illnesses has been presented to the American Thoracic Society and published in journals such as the International Journal of Surgical Pathology.

Meg Schneider: Meg Schneider is an award-winning writer with more than two decades of experience in television, radio, and print journalism and public relations. Meg has authored or coauthored several books, including The Birth Order Effect for Couples (Fair Winds Press) and The Good-For-You Marriage (Adams Media). Her other book credits include two books for writers and one on casino gambling.
Meg’s journalism honors include awards from the Iowa Associated Press Managing Editors, Women in Communications, the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association, Gannett, the New York State Associated Press, and the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.

This is a good, basic introduction to COPD, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The chapters on the disease progression and the physical changes in the breathing apparatus are well illustrated and described, as are the chapters on medications. There is a good emphasis on life-style changes necessary to improve quality of life for COPDers. The only mistake I found was a common one: the author states in the chapter on exercise that if you're not able to talk and walk at the same time, you're going too hard and fast. That's simply not true for people with COPD,with the possible exception of those in the mild or very beginning stages of the disease. My lung function is about a third that of someone my age without lung disease and I know if I can walk and talk (much) I'm not working hard enough to keep my lungs in the very best shape they can be. The outing may be socially rewarding, but I'm not getting much benefit from it as exercise and if that's all I did, I would not gain functional benefit at all. The reason to exercise in the first place is so that we can enjoy a stroll through the mall with our friends or a day at the zoo with our grandchildren. Other than that, the book is a good introduction to COPD using the "small bites" approach that is the trademark of the "Dummies" books. I would recommend it for patients, caregivers and family members.

Great Source of Print Inspiration

As a designer myself, I'm always looking for sources of inspiration. I especially love printed materials, and this book showcases a great collection of printed work. As the title of this book states, print matters! Using different print techniques and materials make such a difference in how a concept comes together.

This book is divided into 4 sections: Branding & Identities, Books & Pages, Posters & Invitations, and Products & Packages. There's also an index of icons that indicate the various printing and production techniques used on each project. There's 1 to 2 spreads dedicated to each project, a brief description, and the photographs are beautiful and detailed. I do wish that some projects had more photographs.

One could easily go online and get a ton of inspiration, but I like that this is a collection of solid work from around the world. There's good work you could've easily missed online (or possibly ones that are not submitted online). Even if a lot of these projects are not applicable to what you may be doing, it's still wonderful to see the possibilities of print, and the clever solutions designers come up with!

I took off the jacket for easier reading, and turns out the black paper on the book loves fingerprints. :( Overall though, this is a great addition to my Victionary and Art + Design collection.

I absolutely could not put this book down. From the premise---a groom dies in a one-car accident driving the opposite direction of the church on his wedding day (with a baby gift in the back seat)--to the beautiful story that unfolds as a woman comes to terms with a life she did not choose. I loved how Allen wove in the difficulty of mother/daughter relationships with the fabulous story line regarding the main character's Grandmother Ruthie. There was so much to love in this bittersweet tale. Do not miss the opportunity to read it for yourself.

Loss is at the center of this novel. The main character, Olivia, grapples with some difficult issues in her life. I enjoyed how her character developed throughout the novel although at times she seemed juvenile. Overall, the characters were believable and this was an enjoyable read.

I got this book from a Goodreads giveaway, and I am so glad I did.

The beauty that is this book needs only to be read. I fell in love with the characters in the first few pages. This story will make you chuckle more times than you can count, break your heart again and again, and put you back together again in a hauntingly beautiful way.
