Understanding the link between Economics and the Environment

John Bellamy Foster was a late arrival to environmentalism, having focused previously on what seemed to be more urgent issues of global justice. This book, from the early 90s, builds on the prescient ecological observations of Marx (Marx's Ecology: Materialism and Nature) as well as the more recent work of economists like Herman Daly (Steady-State Economics: Second Edition With New Essays). The bottom line is that global justice cannot be separated from environmentalism, a viewpoint that becomes more obvious as we bungle our way into the 21st century.

Used for College Book

Great art work and descriptions within the book; I used this book for my 3D design class in college. You don't necessarily need the latest edition, same content in the book regardless, the primary difference it that the later book is in black and white while the newest is in color. Or at least that is the only real significant difference I have seen.

Great shape for an excellent book

My husband teaches basic sculpture in a university. He said this book teaches 3D design using the basic elements and principles which make construction much easier to understand for a new student. The book was in terrific shape and came with in 2 days. It is a must have for anyone needing to figure out the fundamentals of design in 3D construction.

Truly the Bible of Today's Colored Pencil Techniques

Finally- a truly outstanding and beautifully researched and presented book on today's colored pencil artwork. The appendix alone is worth the price of the book- which has charts showing the lightfast ratings of (almost) all major brands of colored pencils (including the brand new Caran d'Ache Luminance pencils, Derwent Colorsoft, Faber-Castell Polychromos and many more)...well, all except standard Prismacolors since the manufacturers would not give the author that information. A very useful color index is also given for colors when it was available, which gives you information about what pigments were used in the manufacture of the pencils...and another thing I have been wanting- an up-front break-down of which pencils are waxed based and which are oil based.

This book has all the information you will need- such as materials, including much needed information on solvents to achieve a paintery look that puts colored pencils out of the 'drawing' stage and into the 'fine art painting' stage. Information about how to rough up paper to achieve certain effects (such as orange peel)and how to frame colored pencils is included, and a great (and easily understandable) section on color theory, light (and shadows). Her explanations are so clear and easy to understand that they are like a breath of fresh air.

Mastering Essential Techniques is a terrific section, that includes the use of photos and photoshop. I loved seeing the equipment she uses too- including the new electric hot and cold colored pencil drawing tablet.

A truly exciting section is included on creating surfaces and textures that includes:
Backgrounds (my real weakness)
Greenery (grass and leaves)
Flowers including white petals (very difficult for me to handle)
Water (including dewdrops, liquid, and ice)
Fire (I have never seen this included- I want to do volcanic eruptions)
Surfaces (beautifully done Wood, Silver, Pearls, Cut Crystal, Fabric, Denim, Lace)
Fruit and Vegetables

The book contains a large section on practicing with simple still lifes, which have downloadable patterns and reference photos from the author's website including a pair, cherries, an orange, Indian corn, a dandelion, a wooden mortar and pestle, crumpled lined paper, eggs, a clear glass of water, multicolored glass saltshaker, marbles, a swirled glass perfume bottle. The exercises go from simple to very complex and challenging. After I finish them all I have no doubt that I will be able to paint almost anything in colored pencil.

In short, I have loved colored pencils with a passion since the '70's, but still, many decades later, get frustrated with the results and techniques that I have found in other colored pencil books (in particular trying to use complementary colors which always seemed to grey out my result)- so I piddle along off and on and do my own methods...which have not given me results I can be happy with, so I put down the pencils and switch to other art forms off and on. This book inspires me to work through the exercises with the author, read every word, and in short, finally get serious about colored pencil art.

I hope the author covers water-soluable colored pencils in a future volume.

Oh, and a big thank-you to the author about speaking out on using your OWN set-ups and photos, and not copying other's work (for gallery sales and shows), as well as not printing out photos and coloring over them and calling them original CP work. This is useful information that a lot of artists do not understand the legal implications of, and I for one am very grateful that all new CP artists will have a heads-up. This should give CP work added integrity in the art world.

Good for advanced artists. Not very good for beginners.

If you're an intermediate or advanced artist with colored pencil experience this is a good book.

If you're new to colored pencils like I am this is not the right book for you. It starts out covering a lot of things as if you have never used colored pencils, then moves onto advanced topics.

What bothers me is the book title and description saying: `incredible realism- with simple you-can-do-it-processes!'. Which is very misleading. Same thing when you look inside the book and see it starting with basics like colored pencil choices and paper choices. I assumed that it was going to progress from the very basics all the way through.

The highest rated 5-star review is titled: `Great for beginner to expert' and says: `If you have no experience with colored pencils or colored pencil realism, this book will take you from total beginner to gallery level brilliant hyper-realism'.

Almost every example goes something like this: I layered black, blue, red and green on the background and used yellow, pink, etc on the light areas. And it shows one small photo of the drawing. Then I applied a solvent and touched up areas. Then showing a beautiful completed photo. I would have appreciated to see way more steps and photos.

If you're a beginner I would recommend to start drawing and watching online tutorial videos. With the videos you can watch the artist drawing and pause the video while trying to recreate what they are doing. Once you understand color better and how to make decent looking drawings then look into this book.

I don't know who would disagree with me about that. You should be able to draw a decent drawing with colored pencils BEFORE you try to create ultra realistic effects. You need a lot of experience drawing and working with colors and so much else to create drawings that look ultra realistic. It's not just a matter of following along with the 'simple you-can-do-it-processes' in this book.

A more accurate title would be `advanced colored pencil techniques'.

Outstanding!

This is an outstanding and exciting book for those of us who love the control and feel of pencil drawing, but have longed for the intense colors, textures and realism of other media such as oils or acrylics - yet didn't want the expense and mess of those methods. Alyona's text is extremely well written - clear and helpful, with excellent illustrations. The examples of her art contained in the book are stunning. She also will provide pdf files via email of outlines and original photographs for the student to use in learning and practicing the techniques outlined in the text, for those who purchase the book and then contact her. Her correspondance with me clearly indicates her desire to instruct and share the joys of colored pencil with others, an enthusiasm quite clear throughout the book as well.

Easy and engaging read which runs out of puff towards the end

Picks up where Book One leaves off. Three Stars equals a Satisfactory rating with all the strengths of the first book carried over but with a discernible fall off in impact in the final third of the present work.

Why I took two stars off:
1. Zach develops more of a god-complex as though he's The One with all the answers to rebuilding civilization. Some may approve. (The ending where everyone goes round the table giving Zach the Big Stroke is so particularly cringeworthy it's almost satire.)
2. A significant increase in the number of characters means that the overall story line begins to soften and bottom out from about half-way and becomes noticeably once-over-lightly in the final third of the book. The final section of the book is very rushed and superficial as though a deadline was looming and the remaining word budget fast evaporating.
3. The way all the nubile women are made to compete for Zach's sexual favors is overdone. Interesting too how the author focuses on the male characters and stays generally away from developing (or projecting into) the females...a pity.
4. Once the zeds and Bad Guys are out of the way and sustainable supplies are generally sorted there's actually little left to do except pad the story out with soap opera sidelines like finding Andie a partner and making lone trips across country and running into random survivors. Interesting but not gripping...more could have been made of the "evolving" zeds.
5. Rowdy is a complete joke. A cartoon character who should never have been retained. Irritating...really irritating.

All of the above are personal carping peeves...of course. However I think you'll find the central story does progressively droop as the author rolls out more and more extra characters. This is a classic faux pas in zombie novels. In my opinion the ideal number for an action yarn of this type is a core cast of four central characters...everyone else should be kept as dress extras.

Setting aside the above criticisms, there's a lot to like in Z14 and it's an excellent value-for-money page turner. You need to buy both books in order to follow the overall story. Would I buy Book Three? Yes, No question.

You lost me at teenage threesome.

(Audiobook review) Yup, you read that correctly. When there's a teenage threesome involved in a very poorly written book, that's when I call it quits. Being a parent of a teenager, the last thing I want to experience is an author living out his high school fantasies of having the scorned ex, who dumped him for the star jock and humiliated him publicly, beg for his affections now and partake in an every day threesome lifestyle. Even worse, I think the girls are hinting at a 4th! What is this?......the beginning of Sister Wives for teenagers? YUCK!
I just can't see how these books are rated so highly. I read book 1, rated it 2 stars, and went ahead and tried book 2, since it was free from the library. I also have book 3, free from the library, but since I couldn't even finish #2, I will not continue.
Another thing that was just ridiculous about this book, was the main bad guy. (Trying to not give spoilers) This guy is a white supremacist, determined to dominate and rule, but the main character considers him a father figure? Huh? Zach is actually coming up with plans, teaching him how to bring in doctors, dentists, resourceful people, etc. to help build his kingdom, or whatever you want to call it. The last doctor this guy came across, he broke everyone of his wife's fingers, trying to force him into complying and working for him. Now Zach is helping him come up with plans to get doctors to help him? This guy threatened and tormented the black guy, threatening to kill his wife and kids, just because they were not white. Talking out loud with your soldiers, contemplating on how you're going to kill these black people because of their race (N word used in the book) IS TORTURE! But Zach convinces the black family to HELP the guy, to help build his supremacy? What?
How in the world are these books rated so highly? The author is living out his teenage fantasies through Zach. I don't believe he's had any real interaction with the opposite sex since high school, because he has no idea how women act or speak. The main character, who's a teenager, has a God complex, which got world's worse in this book, all women of all ages lust for him, all men want to be him and idolize him, everyone seeks his wisdom and knowledge, even people 3 & 4 times his age......even seasoned military officers seek and take Zach's advise on military tactics! What in the world?!?! It's just too much for me.
UPDATE: I forgot to mention.......there's even LESS zombie action in this book than book #1. It's like after 1, 2 or 3 hours of book (it's an 11 hour audiobook) the author would remember that this is a zombie book and would write one into it. "I saw something through the store window. It was a zombie. I shot it." And of course, with Zach having God like abilities, he could pull this sniper like shot off at 500 feet.
Also, as in book 1, the people are eating better than before the apocalypse! It's steak, eggs, chicken and fresh vegetables every single day. There's so many steaks that they're handing them out for free on the side of the road.

Got carried away with the protagonist

Author got a little carried away with Zach. He goes from a high school kid one year to a battle tasted sf type operator the next. A little bit annoying since I have a military background, just doesn't happen that way. Also sensed a little anti military vibe going on since most of the soldiers were either dirt bags or morons and Zach had to take them in and train them himself. Also beating up a SWAT guy was pretty farfetched. Guess that's why it's fiction

Western analysts have long argued--and Kremlin leaders have recently acknowledged--that economic, political, and social stagnation threatens the viability of the Soviet state and the future of the Communist movement. Many writers, such as Ed Hewett in Reforming the Soviet Economy: Equality versus Efficiency ( LJ 4/15/88), have examined Soviet problems and the solutions proposed in "perestroika," without committing to any firm predictions. In this book, Brzezinski, President Carter's national security adviser, looks at the history of Marxism, Leninism, and Stalinism, current Soviet problems, and the state of the global Communist movement, and argues that Gorbachev's reforms cannot revitalize a system that is in inevitable decline. Timely, understandable, and highly recommended.

A Necessary Historic Read

Any serious student of world affairs should read -- even study -- this book. Brzezinski was director of the National Security Council during the Carter administration so few could write with more authority on the subject of communism in the 20th Century.
First he gives detailed background information on the unraveling of the Soviet empire. Beginning with Lenin's concentration of political control and the use of terror, Brzezinski traces Stalin's total consolidation of power through elimination of rivals and the subjugation of peasantry. Although interrupted by World War II, these tactics were revived in Eastern Europe during the postwar period. Stagnation set in, however, and the systme failed to deliver the promised social and economic improvements.
After Stalin's death, his repressive regime decayed to a corrupton-dominated state under Breshnev, interrupted only by abortive reform movements during Khrushchev's tenure. By the mid-1980s most top Soviet leaders accepted the need for renewal and began to debate how these reforms were to be accomplished.
Brzezinski details emerging unrest, beginning in Poland, and discusses China's "commercial" communism. The events he describes confirm the seriousness of the now often disclaimed Cold War threat and helps the reader to understand what happened, how it happened and what it all means to us today.

Strategic Thinker, Wonderful Book, Remarkable Prescient

What would you say if in 1989, 3 years into Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev's reign as General Secretary of the Communist Party and 3 years before the collapse of the USSR, a man wrote a book called "The Grand Failure, the Birth and Death of Communism in the Twentieth Century"? What if he got it right, and predicted most of the probable outcomes of the Yeltsin reforms through 2000? Brzezinski is that man - predicting the end of the USSR and the political / economic low point of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic long before it happened.

Brzezinski has a thoroughly entertaining history to start the book, explaining the appeal of Marxist/Leninism to the poor, the disenfranchised, the academic, and the war weary. He has a really cogent categorization of the three eras of Soviet politics, and how they differed from each other. Zbigniew also lays out a meaningful and understandable history of Marxism in China and why it was fundamentally different from the rest of the world Communist movement.

The meat of the book, though, is in explaining the emergent major trends in Central Europe and Russia, and in China in 1988 and 1989. Here he was dead on, and he and his staff seem to have read everything published in the USSR prior to Gorbachev and up to the publishing date of the book. Brzezinski predicts the fragmentation of the USSR, the huge nationalistic urges that took their toll on the Russian empire, the economic hardships, and the corruption. He laid out the likelihood of China becoming an economic free-zone under a hard core controlling political regime.

The only thing that ZB seems to have missed is the resurgence of Russia as the 7th largest economic power under the power of the petro-ruble. Further, he's a bit weak on economics while he's incredibly good at pragmatic, political savvy - George Keenan had nothing on ZB. The third quarter of the book is a bit redundant and pendantic as he displays how all the little republics went their own ways, with variations on hating Moscow and having resurgent national movements. He has an excellent index, uses footnotes and has six-seven pages of graphs to back up his assertions. This is no fly-by-night potboiler written by an ex-Congressman lobbyist - this is scholarly politics that should be used to build USA foreign policy. Brzezinski should be a first-round draft choice for the new White House, whether it is Republican or Democrat.

Prescient

Having written in 1989 that Communism would collapse this book is about 80% correct and terribly prescient. Russian bloc communism did collapse in 1990-1991. China has liberlaized its economy. Cuba and N. Korea remain the only outliers, soon to collapse. This book gives a quick tour de force fo this.
