Don't Wish Upon This Star...Get it!

After reading this collection, I have come to a conclusion about the late, great Jack Kirby. He was the Keith Richards of comics. Anyone else would have been content to have just created some of the most recognized super heroes ever created: Captain America, the Fantastic Four, the Hulk. But Kirby could literally never stop spinning new ideas and we all owe a debt to Dynamite Entertainment for Kirby Genesis and its satellite series like Silver Star for making that point.

Silver Star is essentially a cross between Captain America and Superman reimagined for the nuclear-paranoid 1970s, America's own personal superhero dealing with menaces beyond the scale of most ordinary people. Jai Nitz takes this premise and gives it a spin that recalls H.P. Lovecraft as much it does as Kirby. He shows a being that can do anything but ultimately chooses to strike a balance with the rest of the planet. The first scene in the Nursery brilliantly illustrates the horrific costs implicit in attempting to "fix" the world. The bad guys are appropriately less than obvious and at least one of them is a joke that only he doesn't get.

The one weakness of this story is the fact that it focuses so heavily on the demi-gods present. The human cast and scale are not as emphasized, which I feel weakens it a bit. However, anyone who would like proof of what comics can do in terms of storytelling can do much worse than this collection.

Good, but very basic

I bought this book since a University offered me a Molecular Medicine postgraduate class. The truth is I find the book too basic, but I gave it four stars because even though It's simple, It has a very good order and few but very well searched examples. It is a very good choice for somebody willing to have a first approximation with molecular medicine; for somebody with background in the subject I don't recommend it.

Good introduction to molecular medicine for clinicians

I am creating a module in moleculr medicine for postgraduate trainees in haematology. I feel that they can read this easily to obtain a useful background. There are not as many illustrations as in similar books, but the text is clear and the illustrations appropriate.
