Kerouac and the Blues..

Jack Kerouac wanted to be known as a jazz poet and with this poem he proves that he is. Mexico City Blues is one of my favorite Kerouac books and a lot of fun to read.
The 242 Choruses are free-spirited and spontaneous, almost like they've been written just before you turn the page. If you've read and enjoyed "On the Road" or "The Dharma Bums" pick this one up and enjoy.
A little Miles Davis, John Coltrane, or Charlie Parker playing in the background will add a whole new dimension. Sweet.

One long, magnificent, riff of the written word....

I remember when I first stumbled across this book in the early 90's- it was like Christmas came twice that year. You see, I had thought that I had read absolutely everything published by Kerouac, prose and poem. I didn't know this existed, Wow! It is like one long, magnificent blues or jazz riff of the written word. It is a true blues composition because it has genuine soul. The more I think about it, it just might be the best thing that he ever did.
I know this is going to sound outrageous, but the only comparable book of American poetry I can even think of comparing this to would be Whitman's _Leaves of Grass_. Whitman and Kerouac both sang of the same grass roots, mystical, America. And it's still out there, if you shake your mind free of the preconceptions and the [junk]....

Great way to get into Kerouac's poetry

I have been a Kerouac fan for a long time, but it was a couple of years after reading most his novels that I was able to get into his poetry. "Pomes all sizes", for example, sat unread on my bookshelf for some time. "Mexico City Blues" is what really turned me on to his poetry and made me able to appreciate it. I was able to go back and read his other petry with new eyes. This book is fantastic. Read it out loud to yrself, the man had a natural knack for rhythm. Great book.

Essentially a cut and paste of others' work with exercises - not a classroom textbook

I am taking an Introduction to Sociology class as part of a required course for my Computer Science degree. This text book is used in the course. The book does not address specific audiences, so I would assume it is written for audience without any sociology background.

Although the authors of this book write some of the chapters, the majority of the book consists of other researchers' paper or articles regarding each chapter's topic. This makes the style of writing in the book inconsistent and hard to follow.

The book does not come with glossary. Some of the vocabularies are introduced in the prior chapters, but I often find myself lost of context because of the jargon used in this book.

The exercises or workbook activities are confusing sometimes. For example, one of the question asked "According to John Dewey, is man defined by his environment or does his environment define man?" This question can definitely use a better wording.

I would avoid this book, if it is not required.

About the Author
Jim Kraus grew up in Western Pennsylvania and is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. He attended the Paris-American Academy in 1971 and has spent the last twenty years as a vice-president of a major Christian publishing house. He has written more than 20 books and novels (many with his wife, Terri) including the best-selling The Dog That Talked to God (Abingdon Press, 2012). His book, The Silence, was named as one of the top five releases in 2004 by the Christian Book Review website. He is also an award-winning photographer. He and his wife and 14-year-old son live outside of Chicago with a sweet miniature schnauzer and an ill-tempered Siberian cat.

Swell story

This is a story about a man with nothing to live for, a little boy who hopes to live and the dog that that helps them see the truth. George is a widower. Laden with guilt, he plans one last cross country RV trip. Alex is a sick child who has developed severe allergies to his beloved St. Bernard, Lewis. It will take a year for allergy shots to take effect so George, under pressure from his daughter, reluctantly agrees to a canine companion for his road trip. Lewis is the ultimate canine counselor. He is a great listener and loves unconditionally. Resistance is futile.

This is a nice little story sure to appeal to dog lovers.The author portrays Lewis beautifully. Lewis is man's best friend, healing the hearts of his human companions. true it is fairly predictable and most of the book involves George's musings. It is gentle and heartwarming and does justice to dogs, seniors and kids.

Sometimes, listening to a dog is exactly what you need

Lewis won me over. I typically don't read faith based literature of any sort because I find most of it overbearing and the writing or plot is forgotten in the author's urge to send a message. Fortunately, Conversations with Saint Bernard doesn't fall into this trap. This is a very soft, gentle story about lost people finding themselves, finding each other, and a path through the darkness of guilt, grief, illness and emotional transition. Who else could guide them except a gentle giant of a Saint Bernard?

Lewis seems to have a gift of full understanding of and the ability to communicate back to the people who need his compassion, guidance and love the most. As a life long dog lover, owner and rescuer this concept doesn't surprise me in the least - nor is it remotely out of the ordinary to think of God or Forces of Good (or whatever you want to call it) working through the pure hearts of our dogs in our care. The author handles this nicely throughout the book and gives Lewis a full personality without making him less of a dog. During a trip across the nation, we watch the bond between George and Lewis evolve as well as George's own relationship with himself evolve and that was nice. There's a selection of questions at the end to open a discussion on the book's messages for a club reading if you're so inclined. I may recommend this one to my neighbor for ladies quilting group actually. I'm glad I read this book...I put it away and hugged all six of my sweet dogs and I swear they all said "We love you too."

Exceeds in excellence

One of the major perks of being an Amazon Vine reviewer for me has been the opportunity to become acquainted with Abingdon Press. I have found that virtually every book I have chosen from the “Christian Books and Bibles” section of “Vine for All” has been interesting, uplifting, and thoroughly enjoyable. “Conversations with Saint Bernard” by Jim Kraus, however, “exceeds in excellence”.

The basic plot is of course simple and straightforward. George Gibson, still grieving the death of his wife, plans a cross-country trip as a valedictory. Alex Burden, after a precarious childhood with repeated heart surgeries, seems “on the mend” until it turns out he’s allergic to his beloved dog Lewis. Through the intervention of Providence working through George’s daughter Tess and Alex’s mother Trudy, it eventuates that Lewis becomes George’s traveling companion, but much more as well, during the time it takes for Alex to take desensitizing shots. The dog is psychic, or perhaps an angel in disguise, and serves not only to bring George in contact with several people along the way that he “needs” to meet, but also insists that he confront and deal with the truth.

The story is lively, amusing while of significance relevant to the issues it resolves, and develops the “special” character of Lewis without overplaying the anthropomorphism. Other characters, as well as the under-girding theme of how prayer does (and doesn’t) work make this a story well worth reading and sharing with loved ones.

Bravo Renee Rose For A Delightful book

Another awesome book by Renee Rose. The storyline is great. A young actress Marissa is making a movie with an older man, Joel and when on location did very well. She has a mansion but has no control over it. Her sister parties every night and has the master bed room. Her sister and her mother are spending her money and Marissa is heading for a breakdown. Joel takes charge of her and becomes her daddy. As her confidence builds her acting with Joel is off the charts. This has elements of well done Ageplay, with enemas, spanking and panty melting erotic sex, this was a wonderful book, once I started it I could put it down.

This is a sweet, romantic and Hot age play! A very detailed plot, wonderful writing and likeable characters makes for a fantastic read! I felt so sorry for Marissa but Joel stepped up and their chemistry was exquisite. Absolutely loved this book! Nicely done Ms. Rose!

Marissa's life is in a mess. She has finally landed her dream role with a very handsome well known actor she has longed to work with and it is hanging by a thread. Marissa has lost her rock star boyfriend, her family has landed her in a pile of debt up to the poor girls ears. She can't focus or concentrate enough to play her part in the movie.

Joel, a man who knows who he is, what he wants. He is invested in the movie Marissa and him are doing but it looks as if it might flop if she cant get her act together. So, he is determined to not only see the movie get made but make sure Marissa keeps to her contract.

Marissa is more than willing to allow Joel to help but in the process she learns more about herself and the man she now calls Daddy then she ever did before but will it be enough to turn her world around? Is Joel willing to truly risk his reputation on her as well as his heart?

You will just have to dive into the pages of Renee's story to find out like I did but I can guarantee you, you won't be disappointed.
